Do I have the wrong polariser?

I am using a Canon 5d mkii with an EF 24-105 1:4 L lens. I recently bought a B+W 77mm KSM F-PRO circular polariser. I experience vignetting at 24mm (but not beyond that). Is that to be expected at that focal length with a full-frame sensor? I'm wondering if the problem is that I should have gone for the 'slim' version of this polariser (if so, I can still exchange it in the next few days).

Hi Struan and welcome.

Yes you can expect a bit of vignetting 24mm on full frame with a CPL, you will also likely see uneven polarising effects in the skies due to the wide angle and varying polarisation of the light across the scene.

If it isn't to extreme then you could probably just sort it in post processing.

You're correct in assuming that a slim version of the filter would have been better, if you can exchange it then I probably would.
 
Did you stack it on another filter? That's a common mistake and will increase vignetting.
 
You won't get any vignetting with just one filter of any type on that lens at 24mm.

You'll be able to detect a bit at f/4 but it will disappear quickly when stopped down. The Digital-Picture review of the 24-105 reports this too.

I would still recommend that the OP goes for the low profile filter if they have the opportunity.

Sorry, I beg to differ. And it would be a major design flaw if it was true. I don't even get vignetting with a standard filter (5mm mount depth) on a 17-40L. It would get worse on stopping down, by pulling the intruding filter into sharper focus, not better.

What I suspect the OP is seeing the the natural optical vignetting of the 24-105L, which is severe at 24mm f/4 and looks very like it might be the filter. Turn on Peripheral Illumination Correction (bottom of the first menu on a 5D2) and it will probably disappear.

Hoppy, you have a point there in your second paragraph. It's one of those settings I've set and forgot about :bonk:
 
Thanks everyone. I didn't have any other filters in place when using the polariser, but nor did I have Peripheral Illumination Correction activated.

I left the filter in the office today (with the intention to send it back to Amazon) but will retrieve it and test this out before I decide whether to send it back.

I greatly appreciate the advice.
