I was wondering if anybody on here has had any problems with there Canon 5D MKII
I've been using one since end of march and all I've had is problem after problem, now its on its way back to Canon
First problem the mirror would freeze this has happened dozens and dozens of times, error 80 reinstall battery.
Spoke to canon a few weeks ago about this but claimed they didn't know of this problem. Odd thing is if you google this problem its all over the internet (maybe canon don't have internet access) Today I spoke to them and they now confirm there is a known problem but didn’t confirm if they new how to fix
Second problem. Last week what seems to be the gasket/seal around the sensor has slipped and covering the top right corner of the sensor. At this point I decided it will have to go back at some point as this was very annoying.
Third problem. Monday it wont take pictures shutter works ok but only comes up with white screen with pink lines or all pink screen instead of image.
So now its on its way to Canon.
This camera has had less than two months usage and has taken less than 700 pictures.
I understand not every camera can be perfect but 3 faults so soon.
This was bought from a UK dealer but I’m not sure of its origins as it had already been opened when I got even the battery was loose in the box and unsealed.
I did inform the dealer of this at the time but they stated “not to worry sometimes they come from Canon like this”

Sounds like you just got unlucky, can you not speak to your dealer and see if they will exchange it for another one in light of all the problems you've had with it ?

And don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure they DO NOT come from Canon "like that". But it's not uncommon for dealers to take out the kit lens from the box and sell just the body

Was it bought new?? If so reject it under the Sale Of Goods Act as not being fit for purpose.....same idea if you get a duff car...but you have to do it sooner rather than later otherwise you will be deemed to have accepted the goods.

I am trying to get the dealer to replace with a new one. I'm waiting for them to phone me back.
There is a lot more to this story about this camera from being lost in there warehouse for days to me getting after over a week.
Fingers crossed they will replace.
They said they would speak to me today but no phone call, i did phone them today but no one available to discuss

Yes i did buy new in march this year. I first phoned them about problems on the 10th may, over 2 weeks ago and asked about replace but they said no then

I would say that three fairly major sounding faults are more than enough to warrant rejecting it....give Trading Standards a call if you have any problems and they'll be more than happy to help. You must put it in writing that under the Sale of Goods Act you are rejecting the camera as not fit for purpose...phone call is not good enough.

Sounds like you just got a knackered one; it does happen!

Has anybody else had a LEMON 5D MKII?
Or am i very unlucky?:'(

This is complete bull, they never come opened from Canon, they come with a seal on the box that shouldn't have been disturbed.

My 5d2 went back for an intermitant line on the rear screen. I complained about hot pixels. It came back 4 days later with a new screen and a new sensor. I'm CPS registered which helps.

As to my 100-400L that took 7 weeks and a pack of excuses to get fixed but thats a long boring storey.

And the dealer was....? Perhaps a 'name and shame' might help a bit?
Sounds like they should definitely replace this as a duffer!

If i dont manage to sort out, when i say sort out i mean a new camera in my bag by end of next week I will name and shame but i feel i must give them the chance to do the right thing first.
Canon UK today who know all the story agree with my reasoning on wanting a new camera, as i could never trust this one in the future

I bought a duffer, major autofocussing problems, from Jacobs but to be fair Jacobs admitted the fault and I got it exchanged. The replacement had to be sent to Lemanns (twice) for calibration. :shake:

You bought in March and 3 faults developed in May. I would say the dealer has to to sub. and I would lean on them heavily and threaten them with trading standards.

I'm still waiting for a phone call:shake:
I have contacted them both today and yesteday but still nothing.
They have said again today i will get a phone call as soon as they can:shake:
I still at this stage have no idea if they will replace

I would threaten the dealer as above with sale of good act......but assuming you paid on either credit card or visa bebit card can you ask your card issuer to charge back as you don't have the goods and they're not fit for purpose anyway.

Good idea, yes i paid by credit card.
I cannot threaten dealer with sale of goods act as i only ever talk to a assistant and never management

My first one had a ridiculous number of dead and hot pixels but I got a replacement no problem from Jessops.

No phone call again today :cuckoo:
I did speak to an assistant who works there and they told me the the policy for replacement faulty goods is.

1- They will replace within 28 days of purchase

2- If longer than 28 days but within 6 months they wont replace its down to Canon to do

So looks like its down to canon now, mind you i have no idea were the camera is at the momment:suspect:

As someone who has worked in retail for over twenty years (not camera trade) your contract is with the shop and as such it is down to them to get it sorted. The shop is allowed a reasonable period of time which is normal seen as 10 working days to seek professional advice from the manufacturer before they take action if the fault is not obvious.

Given the faults listed I would have said you have strong case for replacement, but from comments dealer made with regard to how the new camera arrived I would not have confidence they are 100% honest.

Might well be worth speaking with trading standards on the issue, they are usually very helpful and can clarify both your rights and those of the dealers to you.

Many thanks for help. I have now spoken to my credit card company and i have to call them back in the morning.
It is a big well known camera shop that has a good rep, indeed me and my husband have never had any problems with them till now, And this is just stupid:bonk:

get in touch with their canon rep, these people are the account managers for all the big shops. tell him/her that they sold you a duff body and that you are now more inclined to get a full refund and switch to Nikon or something. This should help apply pressure from Canon and hopefully you'll get a result by burning the candle at both ends. You could also act very coy and ask Canon when they are going to send you a replacement, because thats what the shop told you. Canon will then proceed with having stern words with the shop.

Good ideas thank you. How would I find the Canon Rep?
The shop in question is Warehouse Express
I have now found out the camera is still with them for some reason.
No idea why as no supervisor will return my calls and tell me whats happening.
It was posted to them last wednesday 26th May

If you call Canon UK support, say you'd like to speak with the account manager for WE, they wont put you through or give the details at first, but say you have been told that only that person can help you, and act very coy. unfortunately its a little underhanded, but i find that if i sound like a wet fish on the phone and pretend i know nothing other than what i have been 'told' it implores the other person to help that much more.

Good luck with it, let me know if you need further help. I can try and put you in touch with a guy that I know at Canon.

My Canon 5D11 shot 962 images then the shutter/ mirror assembly fell out onto the lens, when I informed the shop they replyed oh thats a common fault only takes a few min to put right......... UM...NO.. I got a full refund and went Nikon it was the best move ever.

Oh that was after buying the 1Dmk111 which after a fortnight of use stopped writing to the CF & SD cards...lol

Wilky

You'll find that for every canon user with a bad experience, there's probably 20 satisfied users. Every manufacturer can be prone to some design flaws/quality control problems.

just to mention on this - the shops 'policy' does not and cannot replace the sale of goods act - no matter how much they'd like you to believe it does & I would also put a complaint in to tradeing standards about them doing this.

As you bought (I assume) remotely as well I'd get your credit card company to charge back as the easiest solution, although you may find that telling them you've done this may focus their minds on solving the problems also.

I find that a bit shocking - I've had 20 years of good experience with these guys...

Bank-Holiday Weekend? No-one was at work in the UK last weekend...

When you mentioned the opened box, my initial thought was: faulty goods returned by another purchaser had got 'mixed-up' with the good stuff...
this may still be the case - bad accounting and stock-management rather than outright deception.

Either way it sounds like a duff camera and I'd want a replacement new body, not a repair... when something has that many faults off the bat, you'll never have any real confidence in it, no matter how much of the innards they replace...

I agree.
But why why wont they let me speak to a supervisor or managment?
I will not be calling Warehouse Express again as that would be pointless
Today i will be talking to credit card company, trading standards and Canon UK. I hope to get answers today.
Thankyou to you all for advice and help

A wee up-date

My Credit card company have spoken to Warehouse Express, but no managment available :cuckoo: so had to speak to call centre agent.
Warehouse Express have now said to credit card issuer.
1- We have the camera here and will check camera hopefully this week. When checked we will send to Canon UK.

2-They also stated 99.9% certain the camera will not be replaced

My card issuer are now sending me all details under section 75 of the consumer credit act for me to fill in. They will then pursue this avenue.

I have also spoken to canon uk and explained in more detail what has happend and they have now esculated the issue and handed details to higher management RCC.

Look on for sale section soon. If that camera comes back i will go to nikon.
Reason i could never be confidant using that camera and most certainly wont buy another 5dii

Woops forgot to say. STILL NO PHONE CALL FROM WAREHOUSE EXPRESS

I think you're being a little hard on Canon here, you've had one duff camera body and you're willing to switch manufacturers because of it? That might end up costing you even more money! Every manufacturer will have a few bad eggs go through quality control, some more than others, but generally Canons are pretty ruggidly built to last. I know a lot of 5D MkII owners (and I'm jealous of the lot of them) and I've only heard of a single incident of a body going back to Canon and they repaired and returned the camera pretty promptly. At the end of the day, any retailer will try to repair rather than replace a product if they can because of the cost difference involved.

If they repair it and return it to you in working order I think you'd be silly to sell it immediately after. Keep it for at least a week or two and test it thoroughly for any recurring problems and if it's still not operating as it should be then perhaps it would be time to sell up and move to another brand. But to have one bad camera body and react like this just seems a like a knee-jerk reaction to me.

In any case I hope you get your 5D MkII woes behind you and keep on shooting no matter which brand you end up using ;)

My LCD has just stopped working on my 5DII - It will go back to Canon and come back as good as new I'm sure. Don't let the experience rob you of a great camera.

I understand what you are saying. But i would not be happy or confident using that camera in the future. I want to keep canon and use a 5D but not that one.

Given how many woes you have had with the camera, and all within such a short time of purchase, I'd have rejected the camera as not fit for purpose under the Sale of Goods Act, and demanded a refund.

It wouldn't have put me off buying another 5D though, but I probably would have bought the replacement from a different supplier.

Its not a refund i want its a replaced new 5D
What im saying is i dont want that camera back as i dont trust.
If im forced to have camera back i will sell (at a loss) but will be unwilling to pay for a new one (again at a loss)
Hope that makes sence

I have now had a email from WEX saying

Sorry for delay we have a backlog of returns after bank hols and will sort yours out asap.

And they cannot return my phone calls because paste from email
"It’s not about not wanting to speak to you, I’m in and out of the office all day

Sales Manager"

I have been trying to speak to them since wednesday 26th last week.
So as i see it is

1- warehouse returns dept, have large back log and are days behind

2 -Management have back log  or something and are unable to talk to customers.

Very professional

When will they open the camera and send to Canon?

P*ss poor customer service from WE and a bad advert on TP where I'm sure there are many members who use WE. I personally have used them with no problem, but one bad experience is always remembered. I'd let them know this is a saga being played out on this forum so they know how many potential valued customers can see how poor their service is if something goes wrong. You never know it may gee them up, although with the Sales Managers response I doubt it!!

Good luck sorting it out.

This morning i sent them a link to this thread and canon. Thats when i got the first ever email from them with above details

Keep at it. The retailers all too often pass the book onto the manufacturers rather than dealing with the problem themselves. Like has been said, the contract is with WE not Canon!

Shame I'm only just reading this, I was in the WE showroom this morning and could have mentioned it in person for you.

Have you tried avoiding the sales staff by either rininging the showroom (01603 481933) or the business account number (0845 299 0198)? the showroom guys were extremely helpful (and I know they read this forum) and whilst they probably couldn't help directly I'm sure they can light a firework in the appropriate orifice office.
