Do I have a dud 70-200 F4 IS?

I would buy another one in a instant, the only other possibility would be the 70-300L as I do sometimes run out of mm at the long end.

I have a 1.4XII and it's OK with this lens/camera combination but not great. This would be my main reason for going 70-300L

I did notice when I had the 7D, that it didn't like the extenders. I now have the 70D to sit alongside the 5D3, so maybe the 70D will play nice, I don't know.

Maybe I wouldn't need to use an extender if I went with the 70-300 on the 70D

Your shots are plenty sharp, I would be happy with that, but it would be interesting to see how the 70-200 f4 is would do with the 1.4 MK3 on the 70D
 
Tis a quandary to be sure, when I bought my 70-200 and 1.4xII the 70-300L wasn't available.

If it had been I think I would have bought one of those.

The 70-300L is cheaper than the 70-200 f4 IS and 1.4x mkIII.

I suppose you lose a bit of aperture at 200mm on the 70-300 as it's on it way from 4-5.6 but I'd be surprised if you'd notice.

At the moment I have all 3 in your list .. the lens I would sell last (and is permanently in my bag) is the 70-300mm. It's not as fast as the 70-200mm and doesn't have the range of the 100-400mm but you have more scope to crop with the 70D and it handles noise better than the 7D (apparently) so it sounds an ideal compromise.

Heavy crop, 300mm wide open on the 7D

I was looking at the 70-300L for my current T3i and future 70D and came across the EF-S 55-250 IS STM, being curious as I am had a quick look at the resolution compared to the 70-300 and very surprised.

Looks to be a significant improvement over the 70-300 non-L, and very close with L version (if not better than it) at most focal lengths wide open - especially the wide end.

Granted, resolution isn't everything and this is for the APS-C guys only - but something to bare in mind considering it's price point so thought I'd share.

Thanks for the info, I would probably use it on the 5D3 too, I don't have any EFS glass at the moment, but would like the 17-55 2.8 to plop on the 70D:love:
