Darren,

A 4" candle in a wok of water.......

Amazing how the mind can be tricked! I honestly thought it was a tea light floating around.

Looks better with the enhanced reflection, and forgot to mention - excellent positioning of the wick on intersecting 1/3rds........

I didn't realise people got their rulers out to check

Original take on the 'chemistry' theme - spot on with the flame reflection - I really like this photograph :)

I like this a lot Darren.
A bit of a dubious connection to the theme, but if chemistry got you thinking along these lines and if this was the end result then that's good enough for me.

I definitely prefer it with the reflection, although maybe a slightly lower angle would have given a more elongated reflection and made a bit more of it.
The simplicity of the black background works brilliantly for me and the part of the candle that you can see is perfectly sharp.
As already said, it's got a real calm and tranquil feel to it.

p.s. I wholeheartedly agree with your lesson learnt.

Thanks Sarah. But no more dubious than matches surely? You can bore yourself with a read up on combustion chemistry

I tried to get as low as possible but wanted to keep the wick in view. Any lower and it was too hidden.

Glad you both like :D

I like the shot and with reflection, it gives it some depth and added touch - plus it makes it obvious there is a reflection.
Chemistry was never my strong suit so im with you on this one (however sexual chemistry.. ...maybe not the time or place, moving on)

I haven't come across any match ones yet . . . I guess there might be a few to come?

Only a few. Some very nice ones too.

Thank you Dade. Glad you've taken your sexual chemistry elsewhere :nono:

LOL seems reading your opening comment on Chemistry that a few of us have felt the same about this one.....you've pulled it off better than me though....I really like this image. Perhaps not overly exciting but very nice.....I like the darkness and the warmth of the candle.

Definitely not exciting. I'm sticking to the calming idea that the others have come up with :D Thanks for stopping by

I really like it, Darren. It's very simple, but incredibly moody and suggestive. could be a candle in a dark cavern, a meditation cave, anything really.

As a photograph, this is really beautiful, Darren. Calm, dreamy, mysterious and evocative.

I really think you should take the 'alert' warning out of the title - it breaches the Trades Description Act. :D

I take you point totally on the Chemistry angle (everything in the universe is chemistry!) but, in any case, what are crowbars for?

Oh and it's a 4 inch high candle standing in a wok full of water :D I would have liked it to be lower in the water but the water was already up to the edge and I'm still finding puddles on the floor.

I always like to know how shots are set up - and this is definitely a-coffee-on-the-keyboard revelation!:lol::lol:

Jean

It ain't carp as you put it. I like it. It's dark, mysterious well composed and for my money perfectly exsposed.

Thanks Dean. I definitely wanted to go for isolated which is why there's so much space. Was worried noone would like it :)

Many thanks Jean. The NSFW is there for my bum shot, but I guess everything else is pretty safe so I'll remove it now. Mind you it does tend to bring in the viewers  Mind that keyboard!

Cheers Rob. I was surprised it came out so well exposed. This is pretty much straight out of the camera (with some manipulation to enlarge the canvas).

Stunning image Darren. Calm, serene, peaceful, I get the chemistry in here too... not sure on the reflection... more would have worked better...I do like it though... but water water everywhere and it's still not high enough :D...

Thanks very much John. I couldn't get much more out of the reflection because of the brightness of the flame. Pulled what I could out with a little PP but more than this and it started looking unnatural.

I could have cut a bit off the candle but with my luck it would have crumbled to pieces :)

Intrigued to know who came from this thread at lunch time today to look through all the images on my website (some more than once). Someone from the Huddersfield area :)

Just intrigued. I didn't think it was that interesting to hold anyone's attention that long

Hi Darren, two weeks to catch up on...

I really like the chess shot but I could not find the piece in focus until you mentioned it - duh! Maybe my brain needs slightly less taxing images.

The candle shot is really nice and surely anything burning is some kind of chemical reaction? However, I think I wouild have preferred a more obvious reflection or no reflection at all. Again it left my brain a bit puzzled, but maybe that is the mark of a good photo - not too obvious and food for thought?

Jenny

Thank Jenny. Think I'll adopt it as my new style, you can call Mr Subtle :)

Chemistry - I like it - don't really know what else to say, but I like it :)

You can say you like it as much as you want. That's as much as I need from anyone

I really like this image - does it shout chemistry? - no, but I really like this image - makes me feel all serene...

Phil

Just like a Williams sister. Thanks Phil :)

I can see the chemistry shot as a poster with one of those self help messages underneath. It's a really serene image, doesn't shout chemistry at me but it's a good take on the theme.

Thanks Mike. I'll have to come up with something suitably evocative.

I agree with the others that this is a lovely serene image - I prefer your original with the reflection. And I don't think you need a crowbar either - it is just a broad interpretation!

Thanks Tracer. I don't mind using a crowbar or shoehorn if it means I get something in and on time.

Although this week's is proving to be particularly elusive as I have zero chance of getting out and taking a traditional candid. Will most likely end up being just a snap shot :(

I like this, I think it looks better without the reflection but all the same it's definitely on the theme.

The play shot has a good exposure and I like the "spotlight" being on a singular peice. It might have worked a little better and maybe produced a stronger image if the Pawn was laid on it's side, I think it might have told a better story.
Candle is good tells to me a story of being mellencholly and perhaps sad, it's a simple and I think strong image.

Thanks for popping in Dave. Can't agree it looks better, but I do still like it :)

Thanks for your comments Allan. That's the best idea for my chess pieces I've heard so far. I just need another theme to come up to fit it in to :D

I'm undecided on whether it looks better with or without the reflection. The one with gives more depth to the shot but both evoke a calm atmosphere.

I'm another for the chemistry shot with the reflection removed, i think the reflection could have worked if you could see more of the candle in it.

Thanks for looking. Think you answered your own conundrum there.

Thanks. Seems to be lashings of marmite on my shots recently. But I guess that's what makes everyone unique :)

Completely stumped this week. The obvious beckons, but apart from being at the office I haven't got out at all this week. In fact picking up the camera hasn't really been on the agenda at all. I guess a candid self portrait might be pushing it a bit :)

Fully intend to get this done during the week (aha! I have a wedding on Friday :D) along with whatever Simon pulls out of the bobble hat (please be weddings ).

Will continue to avoid everyone else's threads just in case I decide I want to go for something out of the box (unlikely).

Well at least I can chime in with a Chemistry comment and still not be too far behind.

Nice work with that shot. It's very well thought out and composed. Lovely lighting... All good stuff. Looking forward to seeing Candid!

Ian.

I thought yesterday was going to be a good opportunity to grab lots of good shots and in the end it all turned out a bit crap. Too busy being the bride's brother and a godparent for the double christening after to take any photos of worth.

About the only image of any value is this one as I caught her making final preparations in the bathroom.

No idea what to do for week 12 yet, but it's probably going to be late :)

Lesson of the week, I would never want to be a wedding tog :cuckoo:

I really like your candid shot, a really good image

Thanks Darren. Shame I didn't get more, but that's what the other tog was for :)

Lovely candid shot, great natural lighting and a good composition.

Well done indeed!
