Hi all. Getting a bit ahead of myself here but next summer the wife and our good friends are off on holiday to Florida. Even though it's only adults, we are going to be doing the Disney and Universal Studio parks as well as Kennedy space centre.

I've been before (about 10 years ago), but this time was thinking of getting some action type video's on the rides etc. and so have started to look at action cameras.

I've just seen the DJI Osmo Pocket and to be honest it looks fantastic and I was going to just settle on that, but then i noticed that it isn't water resistant, which will be a bit of no go on some of the rides. There is a apparently going to be a waterproof housing available for it, but at present size and price are very sketchy. The other option is the Go-Pro Hero series (I once had the Hero 5). Pro is that it's waterproof out of the box without any other cases, and it's video quality is a known quantity, and there are a million accessories available for them on line. Trouble is I really like the gimble mechanism of the Osmo Pocket (just wish they had made it splash proof).

Anyone have any views on these two (I know the Osmo Pocket is brand new and therefore probably no one has it yet), but was wondering if anyone else had been on a similar holiday and what they took.

I'm no expert but for what you're describing i would go with the GoPro, more inclined with what you describe, versatile, reasonable image stabilisation but mostly sturdy, no delicate gimbal to break ect. a bit of swimming, no issue, drop it, should be fine, chuck in bag or pocket and know it'll work when you drag it out.

you could always get a GoPro gimble if you needed that steady feature.

I cant really add much to what to get, but i have the Hero 7 black and Osmo Pocket (got it on Friday)
i think the two compliment each other. I dont do sports so the H7 is more a small pocket camera that doesn't need a gimbals(in good light). it does seem a more robust device, and feels like it can take whatever you throw at it.
The Osmo Pocket is more what i was looking for when i got the H7. Its so small its more pocke able than the H7 with a tiny tripod/grip.
Id say the H7 has the edge in terms of image quality, but the OP is close behind and its still very early days for it. FW updates will improve things. AF isnt 100% reliable, even though it has the very cool tracking system. No issues at all with the H7, but then its fixed so you always get a large DOF.
I tend to use my H7 (and Session5) in Linear mode most of the time anyway, so it made sense to get the OP.

Im keeping both. The H7 will probably only be used for holidays, and we have beach holidays coming up next year. The OP will be with me everyday, although thats not to say ill use it everyday. Its just so small and quick to start up etc that its more usable than my smartphone.

I got my Pocket yesterday. Quick test at home and was very impressed with a still photo in my darkish lounge. Video seemed good too. It is better to use than my GP4, just quicker and better IQ. That said, my GP4 was great in Florida. Fun in the pools and waterparks. In Disney its only Kali Rapids in AK and Splash Mountain in MK that get wet. Coaster footage with the GP4 was very good. Useful having it on a wrist strap. Note that cameras are not allowed on all/most rides at Universal, they have lockers you need to put everything in (incl. phones) for the better rides and you are not supposed to use cameras on others. At Disney its all ok.

I only use my GP for holidays, but the Pocket will be used on loads of stuff like trips to London etc... Maybe get a used GP4 or 5 and a Pocket?

Interesting all - thanks,

Dave / Simon, I notice you said "smuggle" on the rides, are they now quite stringent on what you can take on them. I know it's common sense that they won't want someone with a 1½ kilo DLSR waving it about on a ride in case it flies out of their hand and injures (or worse) someone, but are they also quite stringent on action cams ?

Simon, did you mange to use it at Universal Studios (US) as my wife is a massive harry potter fan and the new ride is certainly one at US that I'd like to record her at ?

**as an update, I've just found my Go-Pro Hero 5. I thought I'd lost it on holiday this year in Greece, but it seems I left it in one of the suitcases and just found it in the loft .... happy days :D:D

Hmm...so now the question is, do I get the Karma Gimble grip from GP for the Hero 5, or go for the Osmo ?

Andrew. when i say 'smuggle' i just mean take it on even if its not allowed. I had no issues on any of the rides with my GP. Even on test track i held it up throughout the whole ride without anyone saying anything.
Actually it was a Hero 5 Black i had with me, not my Session. The Karma grip had just come out and my son brought it while we were out there, but we never used it on any of the rides, just a very small grenade grip.

I used it on the HP rides, but they are quite dark and very fast moving, i didnt get much.

Talking if the Karma, its really nice, but there are better 3rd party ones out there, and some are splash proof. They are also cheaper

Cool that you found your GP. Well that the wet part of the holidays covered, seems like the Osmo might be what's missing, or even Osmo 2 mobile for your phone?

They'd more likely allow it if you have something like a chest harness mount, even a short handle they wouldn't want. It's similar in this country bigger rides anyway.

Disney don't allow selfie sticks but I normally had mine on a wrist strap and thats all fine. No need to be discreet at all. In US some rides like the better coasters require you to go put everything in lockers (I believe that someone was killed by something falling from someone on a ride but not 100% on that). I discreetly shot on one ride but I think filming on rides would be more awkward.

Thats why i used a grenade grip and not a selfie stick. I saw a few people being told politely to put their sticks away. I had my GP on every ride, although didnt always use it. As you say, filming on a lot of the rides would be a bit tricky unless you are at the front.
I dont remember having any restrictions in Disney as far as taking bags on the rides, but in Universal they are much stricter.

The more i think about it the more i want to go back with my Osmo Pocket now. Lol.
