Dizzy - My 52!! 52.26 Night

Well another excellent shot from you again this week...the movement doe's make you focus on the 2 opposites of the shot...the guy to the right and the couple to the left looking at a mobile or something.

But the the fact you got it in mono make it all the better for me...

Love this with the motion and the several figures standing still. Mono works well for this too - its funny that I found mono worked better for my crowds photo too. Excellent :)

Thanks for the kind comments guys. It was pleasing to get this one captured and I wasn't sure if I'd pulled it off!

I really like the motion and the mono treatment of your crowds shot - the only thing is I'm finding the big light (or whtever it is) hanging from the ceiling top left a bit distracting. I'm not sure you could sensible crop it out though as you'd lose the top of the arches and tree... thats a niggle though, overall I think it's a good shot

I think this has worked well

The contrast between the dark, gohstly figures and the bright lights in the background are very eye-catching. The man on the right stands out as the 'face in the crowd' and everything has come together in a very pleasing way. Yes, I'd definitely say you've pulled it off.:clap:

Jean

I reckon so too, good shot, well taken, and it works very well indeed

Thanks, I captured this on freemont street, vegas. I really wanted the golden nugget to be the backdrop as I thought the external lights would work. I tried lots of angles and some with 70-200 on to isolate just one arch but nothing worked as well as the wider angle so I was stuck with the huge PA speakers they use for the freemont experience!

now that is a really great shot, well spotted and well taken...

Thanks! The weekly critique is a great motivator to get stuck in to the next weeks theme!

Like the way you got the one guy in sharp focus there.

thanks, Marc. It was getting a little frustrating as there are usually quite a few people standing still taking in the sights and sounds of freemont street, and I do say usually! everytime I thought I'd got a contendor they moved during the long exposure. :bang:

So be honest, how many attempts? ;)

Well, just had a quick look at LR and I shot 55, narrowed that down to 21 in smart collection then chose this one out of around 5-6! I think the biggest problem was that I had the camera on 2 sec timer as a forgot the cable release. It was lots of patience waiting for enough people with someone standing still and hoping they'd still be there in 2 sec!

Forgot to say, it's not counting the other locations I tried out last week that didn't work out!!

Well all your work paid off - a great crowd shot full of action and with the contrasting stillness. Well done.

thanks!

I love this crowd shot: the mono treatment, the venue, the face in the crowd, and the way your eye is drawn into him on a diagonal. So a great composition that works really well :clap:

thanks very much guys

52.8 Wealth. This was not my favourite week's theme so far! It's been a harsh week, back on 4am alarm calls and slowly recovering from being ill. The creative juices seemed to have dried up. As I wanted to break from my normal 'style' I'd borrowed flash and set up a shot using a monopoly board. Unfortunately, just as I was about to submit it I noticed that an almost identical shot had already been captured by one of my fellow 52'ers (excellent job too, Dark Star). b****r, I thought. So, with flash no longer available I thought I'd still go out of my comfort zone on a 'set up shot' but more of my style in it! It seemed only proper that with a theme of wealth it should have links to Vegas life, so here we have 52.8 - The Big Win!

I like the B&W treatment and the nice bit of woodgrain to the left. I actually like the whole image great focus, right on theme. The only little thing to be picky is the bits just off the table at top left are a tiny bit distracting. Great image.

An excellent interpretation of the theme. The focus and composition are excellent. The b/g off the table are a bit distracting but not to bad.
Mark:thumbs:

Thankyou both for your comments. I am kicking myself as I remember sitting down thinking of the best way to ensure off table distractions were removed and then completely forgot to sort it in this shot! In the immortal words of homer Simpson, Doh!!

Very good interpretation. It always amazes me that 50% of us think outside the box with interpretation, and the other half come up with similar ideas....don't ask me which half I fall into though ;)

Crowds - don't know how I missed it but I think you've got that image spot on  I would love to see a colour shot as I always pictured in my mind Las Vegas as really colourful (assuming this is Las Vegas of course ;)).

Wealth - Love it, the grain works well for me, I agree with the comment about the background off the table being slightly distracting and wonder if a slightly higher camera position or a longer lens further away could help?

Still 2 great shots there

Now thats nice and fits in so well with your location David :) B&W suits it in a photojournalistic way - could almost imagine this illustrating a piece in the broadsheets about the perils of gambling :) (or the joys!)

Original and perhaps even more about wealth than my "out-of-the-waddingtons-box" shot :)

:clap::clap::clap:

Again, love the B&W conversion and the great interpretation on the theme. I remember playing a few hands of blackjack in one of the casinos (My first visit to one) and it took me nearly 3 hours to lose my 90 dollars so I was well chuffed :lol:

And like me you've learned/remembered something this month :D

:clap::clap:

b****r, I thought.

A common sentiment amongst the TP 52 crew I would have thought!

I also like the B&W treatment and although there are few distracting elements well done for getting out of your comfort zone and trying something different

That's a cracking shot...

Works brilliant in B&W...it's excellent...Oh and I like it...

You've come up with the goods every week so far mate...

Good interpretation of the theme. I like the b&w treatment and the way there is a little more light falling on the ace of spades.

The composition is strong enough to draw the eye away from the few bits of background you wish you'd thought about (oh, how often I've been there!).

:clap::clap:

thanks on both Simon. The colour and lights of vegas usually only come to life when you sit back from the strip and look as a whole! I've got some, somewhere of the Fremont Street experience where the whole roof is a giant movie screen. I did try some from a higher angle but didn't have the same impact unfortunately.

Why thank you! The plus side of doing this one instead of that Monopoly shot I had is that I could stay mono!!! :D

I hope you took advantage of all the free drinks they give you while you're on the tables

That's a cracking shot...

Too kind!! But thanks. Oh the pressure... :bonk:

A common sentiment amongst the TP 52 crew I would have thought! Oh yes!!

I really like this and wish I had had the time this week to re-do myself (I may take it on board for the next reshoot week)

The B&W works well for me and I like the focus on the important bits. I think this would also have worked well with chips and the cards only, being in colour. (although I wouldn't personally know how to do that )

Fab

Thanks Angela. Selective colour is very easy indeed. There are lots of guides on here explaining how to do it. If you can't find any, drop me a PM and I'll explain!

Excellent, will do!

52.9 - Identity. Well, two ideas sprung to mind immediately when I got this weeks theme. The one I really wanted to do was concentrating on a portrait of someone showing what makes them, them. I was thinking back to my days as an elite cyclist and all those hours out on the road, times in the garage with sweat pouring off me on a turbo trainer and how much our lives were dominated by racing. If I was still back in the UK this would have been perfect as I could have grabbed loads of old team mates. Unfortunately, I'm not racing out here and time was against me to find anyone that raced to that level. So... Plan B, I thought about the dark side of identity and the global phenomenon of identity theft. In my mind I had a dark grainy image of someone going through a dustbin searching for personal documents. Thanks to our youngest, Jack, a torch and some of our bills, here we have 52.9 - how safe is yours?

Great take on the theme! B&W treatment works really well for it and the 'theif' is nice and shadowy. Nice one!:clap:

many thanks. I'm going to be in trouble if one of the weeks themes is colour! There's always mono with the selective colour though...

Oh I like this one, very clever idea and a really nicely done shot, the lighting is very good, and it does indeed look like someone is sneaking up on him!

Thanks, shorty. Not sure I've tried to work off one streetlamp before. It may have been better to use a tripod, but I wanted to shoot from very low- I was lying on the driveway - so I just had to try an hold as still as possible for a long exposure!

Great idea, turning identity on its head (and it happened to me once so it strikes a chord!)

B&W is great and the lighting is wonderful - just the right feeling of menace !!!

Nice one (I hoped you weren't going for eyes after last weeks monopoly rush :D)
