Stumbled across this interesting video of UK rapper Dizzee Rascal, who until today I didn't realise appears to be into photography. He's taking part in 'Your Britain' as organised by www.bing.com and if you visit their homepage you can see some of the images he has taken.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MuigPCbAieI&feature=related

Quite an interesting watch and he appears to be using quite high end Canon gear. Any Canon users out there to I.D the gear ;)

I think it's a 5D II body and a 24-70mm f/2.8 lens.

I think someone's bound to comment that the way he holds it suggests he's just been handed it and told to take pictures for the video - the classic hold it like a compact and don't support the lens technique with a bit of TV's favourite method of holding the lens from the side thrown in. He's also lacking a lens hood even though L lens come with them included.

(Edit: This was commented on while I was typing infact)

However, the photos do seem to suggest he's actually trying and the way he moves around and talks about what he's done in some of the other videos look like he's thinking like a photographer does.

Yes, he certainly seems keep  In this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4PkakaOidMw&feature=relmfu) at about 50secs in you can see him get handed the camera after it appears the lens was changed.

He seems to be putting a lot of effort in though.

Grade A OI LANGUAGE!

To be honest all these celebs think they're photographers just because they have an expensive camera, some of them like Richard Hammond are genuine photographers whereas all the others just think they are...

I was wondering how a photo of his barber's chair appeared on my phone this morning... now all is explained :)

What makes Richard Hammond genuine and Dizzee not? Maybe he is a newbie and doesn't know a lot about it yet. Maybe he can afford to have someone change lenses for him. Quite a few pros have assistants to do all the work bar take the actual photo. If you were rich and wanted to start a new hobby, wouldnt you buy the best possible gear you could, regardless of if you knew how to use it?

Not an argument a genuine question..

Thats a fair question, and yes if I could then i would. I don't think many people wouldn't.

surely the real story here is that someone actually uses Bing?

I don't use it by choice (honest).. it just happens to be the default search engine on my phone, and the button is in a silly place for anyone who's a lefty.

Only useful thing on Bing is Birds Eye function on the maps
yep. good for location scouting...copy and paste the location from google maps though ;)
Tbh I can't say iv ever used bing or know what it does lol
it's a crap google made by microsoft trying to play catchup. They're failing.

I'm not saying Dizzee's 100% fake, but you see these celebs like Justin Bieber (well not really a celeb ) paris hilton, miley cyrus and they all think they're photographers just because they carry a d700 or 5dmark2 with 24-70mm lens. They're just snapshooters who have the money to buy a DSLR, I'm not going to criticise Dizzee as he's probably a great photographer who's only just started out but I hate how the media and social groups somehow perceive someone with a DSLR as a Pro Photographer. Almost like we hate the public saying "that camera must take nice pictures" sort of thing. I have loads of girls on FB and they all think they're photographers because they've bought a Nikon, Sony or Canon entry level DSLR just to show off and then start saying "oh yeah I'm a photographer" because it somehow makes them cool and when I ask to see there portfolio or images they've taken they show me nothing but a picture of a starbucks cup with a phone next to it and a book with a pen resting on top of it and then add some effects in photoshop (usually, Lomo, Vignette etc) and somehow think it's art

Yeah I'll agree with you on that one.

There was a girl in a pub I went to last week with a Nikon d40 and a 18-55 taking pictures of the band that was playing. Of course she had to use the pop up flash and was chimping after everyshot. I heard her saying to someone how she was a pro photographer. I was going to ask her how much she was getting paid, but I couldnt be arsed with the argument.
No doubt the band thought the photos were "amazing" and all her little myface buddies will think the same.
Guess I dont need that D700 and 24-70 f/2.8 after all :bonk:

I get what you mean, understandably he can afford the gear and anyone who could buy high end kit would ;) he genuinely seemed keen though. Would be interested to know how long he has been into it or whether it was all for this 'Your Britain' thing.
In regards to bing, never used or intend to use it. Much prefer google

To be fair there is a lot of people like that, difference is most of them aren't famous and in have their photos in the media.

It don't matter how the photographer holds his camera as long as he is able to get good images then it dosen't matter, however as they don't show his images one can assume that they are not turning out! :)

They are showing a new image every day on the bing home page...
Presuming of course they are ones he took and not ones someone took for him!

5D2 with 24-70 f2.8 and he can't hold it properly

Could he be left handed? I'm left handed for some things, mainly writing an although I can hold and operate a camera properly it can feel a little awkward at times.

Can full on lefties confirm?

I'm not into his music but that disco, disco, disco song was pretty catchy! Or have I just shown myself up and that's not actually his song?

Wow, some bitterness here. But seriously. Who cares how someone carries their camera. Creative artist likes other forms of creative art.

Can full on lefties confirm?

I'm a lefty for writing but more dominant right handed for everything else, and i can hold a camera properly, same with my old man. (he isn't even into photography and he knows how to hold it!)

I just wonder if full blown left handed people struggle. I'm same as you, I write with my left but do pretty much everything else right handed. People seem surprised that I hold a camera properly so I wondered if that was the reason he holds it differently.

That was him, you don't need feel embarrassed ;)

Some good points here :) Obviously we will never know if they were his images for sure but he certainly looked to be enjoying himself and getting creative. And thats the main thing I guess that he is getting pleasure from something we all do too. Whereas most people would be knocking about with a 1000D he is just lucky and wealthy enough for a 5D2, who can blame him :D

Add a pretty girl and a laptop and you've just described the product brochure shoot I recently did

I bet he got access to places a "normal - non celeb" could never usually get to.
Shame we didn't see what he'd taken but if it wasn't good he would be able to use one of his entourages photo.
The enjoyment is the main thing to me.

the backstage access he would have would be the envy of a lot of photographers, and his name would be great for opening doors.

i say fair play to the fella, he's got an enthusiasm about him that i really like. if younger kids see him taking an interest in photography and pick up a camera for the first time then surely that can only be a good thing.

he's done well for himself in life, so why not use an expensive camera/lens combo? even if he's only starting out why does he have to start with an entry-level model with a kit lens. to a lot of us the best part of £3000 is a lot of money to spend on camera equipment, i doubt if dizzy has the same problem.

someone always has to lower the tone

Quick google suggests he could be.. check this link - http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_hand_does_soulja_boy_write_with

You could have hit the nail on the head there

I may still be completely wrong.

So, where do we see his images? There's a few on Bing but it sounds like there should be more out there.

If he is into photography then good on him, he'll certainly get access to areas that most of us would love to. I'm not sure if he's famous outside of the uk though? Same with Richard Hammond, i'm envious of the locations he gets too.

bit of a bizzare pointless rant

Who was ranting? I certainly wasn't.

Well I think good on him, you've got to start somewhere and why not with pro kit if you can afford it!

:agree: not only that he might be new to it but hes got money go for the best, also hes probably making lots of money just for doing all those clips and advertising bing so is he getting paid for his skills and does it class him as a pro (well some say if your making money from it then yes your a pro)
