DIY softbox sizes?

Hi there,

I have recently been looking into making some DIY soft boxes with cardboard, tin foil and tape for my speedlight. I think I have found a good article online for this.
Can someone tell me what the biggest soft box I could get away with for a speedlight off camera? Concerned I will make one too big and the speedlight won't have any effect on the subject.

You'd definitely be ok with 24" as my westcott apollos are that size.
I'd aim the flash back into the box instead of pointing it out to aid even illumination.
