Not to sure where to put this one.
I am toying with the idea of making a photobooth.
The actual physical booth isn't an issue. I am quite handy with wood and my dad is a carpenter with a garage full of equipment.
My issue is connecting it up. An impending upgrade will leave my 7000 free for this idea - lens either an old 18-70 or even my sigma 10-20 for larger groups (if not to much distortion) Some kind of touch screen pc in the middle or my old ipad 1 - to view the image - connected to a dyesub printer to print after photo is taken.
Background either some of my photography background paper or a lastolite maybe? curtains for the sides and my thought was to make it adjustable to fit different locations lighting from a spare bowens Gemini 500.
My main issue is how do I get the pc to live view the photo have a safe non steal-able trigger possibly with a timer and then direct print from the printer
I am willing to spend some cash to get it right if it is possible.

It is possible to buy one ready made but where's the fun in that! if you make it yourself it is easier to fix!

wee bit of software involved and a couple of macros. probably going to need a keyboard emulator and a small control panel. simple stuff like button to start a timer then shoot and a button to print.

Whats the business idea? printing is expensive i would more than likely suggest you could rent it out for people to take loads of photos then tell them to review it online.

electronics arent a problem. probably talking about £50 quid for a custom board to control the camera and the PC. bigger thing will be the pc/laptop you are going to need.

wanna chat about it let me know

it probably could be but i think you would be opening a can of worms. you need to find someone that is incredibly good at writing code and it could cost you thousands.

key questions are

1. will this be being left alone or will you be near to supervise?
2. Can you set up software simply at the moment to take pics off your camera and load them on a screen? (im guessing something like lightroom)
3.do you want to give people free reign over dye-sub prints and how are you going to charge?

I think this is what you want to do

1. set up the photobooth at an event have it ready to take millions of pics

2. Set it up so that controls are easy for people to take photos themselves.

3. Have a screen where people can see what they have just taken

4. Let people pick photos up after the event by a website etc.

This would be your first iteration.

2nd iteration

Exactly as above but with the facility to print for this you will need a coin mech with a printer attached, Simple electronics but would make you some money.

Thanks for the replies. higgeh I will pm you if that's ok to find out your ideas.

Not sure as for a business plan possibly wedding with supervision for me as the wedding photographer. I like the idea of being able to review images - no printing and uploads to a website for the guests to purchase.

Thanks

Couldn't Lightroom do most of this for you?

You can tether a camera and set it off remotely. You can automatically process images on import with whatever 'look' you wanted. And you could use LR to upload image to websites. How much of that can be automated I'm not sure.

Or you could process the images on import to LR and then use the Print Module to print in various numbers and sizes.

If you go and do it, would be interesting to see what the final thing looked like, and how it worked. :)
