I'm pretty skint atm, and can't really afford a flash, so for now i'm going to go down the DIY route.

I'm just wondering if i go down to wickes, what'd be the best lights to buy for the job?

Like I say, a flash really is out of the question, so no suggesting I just save for proper lighting please, as I want to invest in a new camera aswell before I splash out on proper studio lights!

Halogen floodlights for a fiver?

Ikea does some pretty cheap varieties of halogen lights. I'm just about to head down there to get some. I too just want to experiment without splashing out (saving that for xmas!)

Have you thought about buying a cheap OLD flashgun and getting a cactus remote trigger for it, you then end up with a great lighting setup at a very cheap price?

A set of worklights and a couple of shower curtains would get you started, but you'd get a set of Cactus triggers and an old flash or two, as Dal says, for the same sort of money.

Ebay is your friend - I picked up eight brand new flash guns from one seller - for £1.00 each

Flash in the pan - any chance of a link to the seller? or was it a one time sale on his part?

Also more on the DIY route.. you can use un-elasticated bedsheets as backdrops and someone also mentioned using a clothes rack as a frame to hold it up.

Regards, James

It was a one time sale, otherwise I'd have bought more

They're only wee low-powered Hanimex Mini 2 flashes, suitable only really for secondary use, but at the price....

Worklights are pretty good and cheap, a lot of them also come with they're own telescopic stands!

They're bloody powerful too.

You don't say what you're shooting or that it has to be at night, so...

Have you considered using the Sun ???

A sunny day if you need harsh light; an overcast one if something softer is required

A pillow (whatever) as a reflector and you're sorted

Just a thought

i use the cheap triggers and flash setup - flashes cost me £2 for some Hanimex models - i have 3 now :cuckoo:. The triggers were £20 inc del fro 2x receivers and 1 trigger.

I then got some converted some uplighters that weren't being used for flash stands and got some hotshoe umbrella mounts (£10 for 2) and a couple of umbrellas (£5 for 2)

Its not the best setup but its alot better than bulbs and work lights. but not as good as studio strobes.

yup all ebay items!

Or just buy some daylight balanced bulbs and use lamps?

That way you don't have to change the white balance or end up with mixed lighting :)

I do alot of things D.I.Y. as a throw back to my days of listening to punk and thinking i was going to change the world. making your own reflectors is fairly easy, i have some that where free, boards from the bin of your local building site, and leftover paint from the painters at said site. you can use those metallic survival blankets stretched tight over a frame as well, shoot during the day if you can, and that is lighting sorted.

if you need to shoot indoors you can get some cheap leds (ikea) or work lights, and make your own umbrellas out of black bedsheets, and the metal from old lamp shades. walk into your local tool shop and talk to the owner, he will have some ideas, and lots of experience making all sorts of things.

in fact, when i have a bit more free time, i will make some of the things i am talking about, and post threads on it, so others can see.

Car windscreen shade (silver) for a reflector...£1.00 from Poundland

Here is one of my wee £1.00 flashguns
