:help: has anyone on here got any advice on making your own lens camo?
have any of you made one, if so what did you find the best material to use and where can i get the stuff from?lol
sorry about all the questions but i really do find it disgusting that the lens coats are about £80 and the reviews i have found explain that the quality of the £80 ''lens coat'' is very very poor for the price, so im on a diy mission to make my own. any help on this would be great. oh and its to go on my siggy 70-200 and 1.4x tc.

also can you post pics of your lens camo, either diy ones or bought ones.

thanks

Gibbo..

I think wildlife watching supples make their own version and it's a lot cheaper than the lens coat version. It was mentioned on here recently.

ahhh thanks ill see if i can find it.

EDIT; ok maybe i wont because the search isnt working at all.lol

Army surplus stores..If you can find Gore-Tex. Either trousers or a jacket will do. Use either the leg or arm, and tailor to fit, if you are cutting the cloth up down the seam, remember to tape the inside seam for a complete waterproof cover...Trust me it works!

Do you mean loose and flappy or tight fitting ?

I have thought abut buying a pair of old goretex camo trousers from Ebay.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/British-Army-...Collectables_Militaria_LE?hash=item4147084dff

You can use one of the legs and some elastic or string and it should be able to cover the body and lens.

Might even be able to use the old leg pocket (if there is one) for a hand warmer compartment.

oh yeah i should of mentioned it would be a tight fit i was after.lol
thanks for that i never even thought of lookin in army supply stores:bonk:

Hi,

I just use a 'Buff' and a couple of rubber bands. It wasn't bought for that mind you it was for my neck but it does both jobs well, it is a loose fit on the lens however as it is only a Canon 400mm F5.6 and it's not waterproof but it keeps the lens covered and your hands warm when in use

Not bad for covering a 200-400mm lens. Protects it from knocks etc nicely.

Then all you have to do is go to a craft shop and purchase some velcro

A cheapo wet suit would do it....Don't buy a used one!!!.there will be sand in it which is a b****r to get rid of, if not impossible.

2 arms, 2 legs...Four covers all in one:thumbs:

Buy some camo gaiters from ebay and use them, they are usually elasticated or have draw strings at each end.

I made a camo cover for my 300-800 out of surplus army camo gortex pants. It never leaves the lens. The lens also has the lenscoat on, I was appalled at the quality when I bought it. We are trying to get some good quality alternatives onto the market, these will be camo one side and black the other. Hopefully soon.

I bought a pair of DPM trousers, not normal material but the waterproof over trousers off eBay for 99p. Cut one leg down to the size I needed for a 100-400 lens, replaced the cord drawstring with elastic (don’t tell the wife, she can’t understand why her pants keep falling down lol). I adjusted the elastic so that it was a snug fit around the lens cap, and easily enough to pull on and off the lens but doesn’t move in the wind.
The other end I have left a little longer than the lens so that it can be folded under itself when in normal use, or if it’s raining a bit, I can pull it over the camera too. Simple and it works.
Another bonus, when I make another lens cover from the other leg, I have a pair of DPM shorts too, but that might not be a good idea.

Thanks Kev. Those are a good price as well compared to lenscoats.

They are. As you may have noticed, I got my price wrong first time. ;) But I have now corrected it.
I have them on my 300mm and 70-200mm also. Kev tailor made the 70-200mm for me. The quality is good in my opinion.
Really do keep the lens like new.

I also have the same for really bad weather. Cheap as chips.

Yeah, they do that, but the ones from lenscoat themselves are expensive,Kev`s are a lot more friendly on the price. The b****r with neoprene is the difficulty of stitching it and/or glueing it. We`ll persevere and see where we get to with them.

I did notice your initial price and nearly thought "sod it" they are cheap enough at that price.....:D

Neoprene is quite expensive on its own at the moment and suppliers are few and far between, as such, they can pretty much charge what they like. You can import yourself, but the minimum order volume required makes it a non starter for an individual to make a couple of covers for themselves, which is a shame. The other problem is the actual working of the material,I won`t bore you with the details of that.

If you do make a cover out of gortex pants, leave it long enough to cover a TC and the camera body as well.

The scrim is a netting. You can throw it over your head yet see through it and drape it over camera & lens.
The Army lads on here will be familiar with it.

There is no real need to stick anything on to your kit. The scrim will disguise you effectively.

im off out to the army surplus store now to take a look what they have.
Thanks for all the suggestions everyone.

Now, just to make something perfectly clear, these are not the sort of sites I visit regularly !!!!!!

I remembered from a few years ago, US hunters used spandex camouflage arm covers. Searching google I could not find these, but did come across these. They should give a snug fit to different parts of the lens. The girls out there could even leave the lace on !!!!!

We have had 10 different samples of neoprene before we found the one that was to our standard, then we had to buy a special machine to stitch the stuff.

We should be up and running with them in 6 weeks.

There will be some self help deals going when we are up and running........;)

i may just wait off until you make some because i cant find camo neoprene ANYWERE its like rocking horse ******.lol the closest i got was some naff camo cloth @ £1.60 per square mtr and it had no give in it so that wouldnt work.lol so if you do end up making some or even supplying meter square sheets of neoprene ill take one or the other.lol
Thanks
Gibbo..

You really would be better taking one of his made up ones. Its an absolute b****r to stitch. Or at least to get the stitch to hold...

Kev.

yeah i think i might do that. if i cant find one before.

Not if you buy the right machine to do it.............:)

You have any idea roughly how much each one will be?

We will have to be somewhere near the competition, needless to say, but we will not market sub standard kit.In all honesty I can`t say for sure until we have the finished product, that is to the standard acceptable to us.
