DIY home studio

What a day yesterday was! We tried to cram too much in really and so after her soft play session (best use the village hall for the smash) with about 10 babies, we had a go at the smash, problem was, she was knackered. A quick power nap and we got some shots but she was quite grizzly, bless her. Haven't gone through them properly just cherry picked a couple to give you an idea.. The gold cake stand didn't turn up in time and I personally think that the gold drops on the backdrop are a bit over-kill, but that's what the boss wanted :-)

Happy Birthday!
Little lady had a busy day! Love the photos! Nice colour scheme and bot over the top at all!
She does not look grizzly, but not sure if she enjoyed the cake :)
Please post more once you have them!
And quick question about the top, is it dress or top and skirt?

It's a matter of priorities David is it not?

£500 of lights and a £100 lens will give better images in a studio than £500 lens and £100 of lighting.

Of course if you're wanting images outside of a studio, the lenses become a priority.

Though some of us need both :(

To me £500 is not 'budget'. For me £500 is the kinda money I like to waste on changing systems roughly every month or so. :D

On a serious note though, you're right. As always.

Here's the opener I guess..

User error! In my haste to lose the sharpness of the BG I used an ND to reduce to f4, I note that even though I purposely wasn't taking much beyond 50mm (and generally that was the average FL) the cake here isn't particularly sharp. Hey ho, live and learn! It's not a deal breaker but a reminder that there's always something else to consider.

PS. The better half was searching for a tutu with the body section as most are not - she's not keen on half naked babies, that is one of her pet hates. In the end, she found this one somewhere in the UK, most were US.

PPS. I'm still not keen on the dangly bits behind, but she likes them so I shall let them be. I'd clone them out if I had my way...

Any flash reccomendations?
what about Manfrotto Lumimuse Multipurpose LED light? Would this work like fill in flash?

I was given very basic flash from polaroid, but my camera settings does not recognize it and everything is just overexposed

It depends on budget, if I was seriously considering life as a portrait photographer I'd be planning this carefully.

Personally, I'd grab a cheap studio flash like this, with a softbox, stand and trigger you'll get set up for less than £200. You could start with a speedlight for less than £150

Not enough power to compare to flash, great as a macro light.

You need to understand how flash works, it'll probably only fire at full power, so you'd need a low ISO and small aperture, bounce it off the wall/ceiling behind you and you might get something.

Thanks Phil!
I'll try the trick and turn the flash backwards :)
I am not going to get studio kit like softbox etc as this is not what i would like to concentrate on and there is no point to get it just for one shoot, but i would need a speed light for sure. As i have not much time left to select it carefully and understand how it works, therefore looking for options like Manfrotto

The speedlight you suggested looks quite good and on budget, will read bit more about it and might give it a go

Thats my set up with the window on the back and bouncing from the wall flash (i've fitted it facing backwards :))
Unfortunatelly my baby was not keen at all and was crying all the time and did not touch the cake...oh well, i will try another day...
