DIY diffuser fabric

When building light sources, are there any alternatives to buying white diffuser fabric from photo suppliers?

I'm expecting bedsheets/muslin to block too much light, but what about those translucent white shower curtains? Or ripstop nylon? Or any other alternatives, that don't block any colour?
