Chaps and chapetts.

Was just wondering if TPF had a folding team? I know people run seti, and other stuff, but lets face it, seti is a waste of time :D And yes, that is coming from a physicist!

I've just been given a dual P3 board and started running folding on each core.

Now, Shall we start a folding team? Would many people be interested?

Consider the slightly higher electricty bill your contribution to charity! :D

What are we folding??

done my stint on on SETI and folding

not going back there, but the team here have no problems with you or someone else setting up a team under the tpf banner :)

As explained in the wiki reference page, its a distributed computing program whereby you run the client software on your pc and it uses the spare cpu cycles to churn through work units (WU's) ;)

Ill be brutally honest, you get nothing in return apart from points for doing more work. I personally run folding because my pc is always on and why not contribute something?

Thanks admin, I might well set one up in the following week and advertise it in my sig :)

On the folding@home homepage there is all sorts of stats on teams and individuals who are running the program, and if we get enough people, we can make our way up the leader board :D

So come on people, join in!

Ill post details of the team name and a rough setup guide when the team name and number is created.

:)

Ok chaps and chapetts.

A team called "TalkPhotographyForums" has been created! :D

Now. to run the program one must do the following.

  • Go to, http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html and download which ever client you wish. For new users, I suggest the graphical client as it is alot easier to change settings once installed.
  • Once downloaded, install the program to a desired directory and run the exe.
  • Once it has loaded, there will be a small red flower shaped icon in the system tray. right click on this and go to configure. In there, you may enter what ever name you wish to be known as (On the folding home page under the stats tab, searching for your user name will generate all your folding stats). Also, use team number 78049.
Other options in these menus:

CPU priority I recommend setting to minimum, that way a performance hit to the computer you are using will not be seen.

To receive larger work units (that require larger amounts of memory, that being over 512 roughly), tick yes to receive. These generally give larger point rewards.

Things like save interval time and fill rate can be set to what ever you want.

Lastly, if you have a CPU that supports the instruction set called SSE3, I suggest using advanced methods of copmputation.

This can be done as follows:

Right click on the .exe that you use to run the program, and in the target line, add "-advmethods". (without the " marks)

You may also with to add -forceasm and -verbosity, but I can't remember what they mean at the moment :D

So please please join in!

Any other questions, please feel free to PM me, or go to this page which will probably be more helpfull!

Cheers!

I ran the United Devices Cancer crunching project on two desktops and a laptop for a couple of years. In principle the conception is magnificent - thousands of private computers all over the world crunching cancer research data which can get through data faster than the most powerful super computers in the world.

In practice though, the efforts of private individuals were pretty well taken for granted with very little feedback from UD. What really alienated a lot of people was when for the lack of new data to crunch, it was discovered people had been crunching old (already processed)work units for months.

I ran the project 24/7 for 2 years and I don't think it's a coincidence that two desktops died on me in the end within days, so it isn't just power consumption you contribute in the end. ;)

I wont be returning to it but if you want to do it my advice is use your PC as you would normally in which case the crunching programme just utilises any unused processing power of your PC.

Well I've signed up to the tp team, so far the team page shows no members and the home page doesn't work. Hoping that will change when my client next updates.

Oddly enough, I appear to be a member of the pc pitstop team and my last work unit was entered on 26/3/06 which is strange...

lol, Smooth. The page should work soon. I was looking last night and they were doing some maintainence.

Thanks for joining mate!

Oh, and member list starts when the first WU is completed by each person.

giving this a try using the SMP version

It wont bust your pc. I been folding for over a year now on and off and I have had no problems what so ever.
Thanks for joining :D

I used to run this on a techy site, been meaning to get it fired up again.

^^^ Sorry that post from Ollie was infact from me, Was just over his house tonight and forgot he was signed in. oops!

Yay! First members of the team have completed a WU :D

nice one guys, My first is almost done, you must have more powerfull cores than me... Not difficult really lol

forceasm, forces use of instruction sets like SSE if the client should crash. ie. prevents it going into safe mode.

verbosity 9 (yes, with the 9) makes the logs more detailed :)

If anyone gets stuck i'm also happy to help them set up whatever, can't run it myself at the moment though unfortunately.

This can be quite 'picky' as a client, so you have to keep a very thorough eye on it to make sure it behaves. Download FAHMon to help keep track of it...

Hey folks, you get 'stiffikits' as well, what more reason could you need for signing up?? :)

I prefer tiffy kats. :p

...ooooh. pretty

Not quite as glamerous :P but this is my efforts from a single core :D

Took me a while to get there as well!

To be honest. Those that literally wipe the floor with processing power are those that run clients on all the machines at their workplace (for example) under their own name so have hundreds if not thousands of active cores folding for them. Still though, got to keep in mind what all this is for. Which is why I'd rather run F@H than seti or something like that.

Just running it on my Mac Mini to see how it effects cpu usage, ie whether it kicks off the fans when I sleep :)

Ahh god damn! even though I completed my first WU for TPF it hasnt combined my points I have built up for other teams in my overall stats for my user name :(

It won't, priority goes to the team, I've got about 270000 from when it was running previously.
