I've heard that due to the silver content, its not advisable to put this down the drain so does anyone know where to dispose off large amounts of waste fix?

I've heard some companies will pay to dispose it as they can extract the silver from it? Is that true?

I thought it was the dev that had the silver content. Either way, none of the standard chemicals are much stronger than household bleach so dilute them well and stick them down the drain.

I think the key phrase on the OP's post was "large amounts of waste fix?" - if you start tipping a couple of jerrycans of fix (presumably with the similar amounts of dev?) a week down the drain i'm fairly sure that not only will it ruin your drains but the local water company will be wanting to talk to you. That's with black and white - start doing colour and they'll be down on you like a ton of bricks!

I'd just dilute it with a load of water in a bucket or similar and pour it down an outside drain - right or wrong, being honest that's what i'd do.

For small amounts used in general home processing (300ml at a time for instance) pouring down the drain is not going to cause any real problems (I always use the outside drain to avoid any problems with chrome waste fittings etc.)

Any commercial user should be getting it recovered in a 'proper manner' though

Another option might be to find a local independent photo-processing bloke and have a word with them - they will have collections for all the used chemicals in place, and for a couple of quid they'll probably include your container with theirs...
