Looking at an add in the daily paper for disposable nappies I have these questions, How can you mothers afford them at £1 each, and where do they all end up...land fill?. I know that some end up in telephone kiosks, by the roadside, and some joker had placed one behind the rear wheel of a car next to mine in an outlet centre car park the other day
In our days the norm was those lovely white "Terry towelling" nappies, and what a lovely sight they made on the washing line blowing in the wind all gleaming white.

Phew! when I saw the title I thought surely not...someone taking photos of disposable nappies. ;)

Pure laziness, and too much money. The old towelling nappies at least you could use them again and back in these days a lot of folk did'nt have automatic washing machines, they were boiled and handwashed. It's the same with modern mothers and buses, they wont get on a bus unless they can get on with the buggy unfolded. My wife used to manage 3 kids on a bus with a folded buggy and carrying one kid a buggy and messages. Their spoilt nowadays. Old nappies were good for polishing the car, can't do that with a disposable.

Is that the theme tune from the 'Hovis' commercial I can hear in the background....:D

My Daughter has made her own nappy liners out of strips of spare fleece material from her sewing business. They are patterned anything from camoflague (sp)!, flowers, snow leopard, to Disney and Bob the Builder. She uses nappies which are shaped like pants and either made from towelling or sheeps wool. It took some getting used to, watching her using them. The sheeps wool ones don't need a waterproof cover either as the natural fibres keep baby dry - wierd I know. Every few washes and she re-lanolises (sp) them. Great for the environment!

Not my figures but worrying if true

Nappy Facts:

Eight million disposable nappies are discarded into landfill every day in the UK.

A disposable nappy can take anywhere from 200 to 500 years to decompose.

About 4% of all landfill is made up from disposable nappies.

The average baby goes through about 4,500 nappies in the first 2 and a half years of their life.

It takes about one cup of crude oil to produce the plastic in each disposable and it takes as much energy to produce one throwaway nappy as it does to wash a cloth nappy over 150 times.

Disposable nappies are definitely a more environmentally friendly option if you can make that extra effort to wash and re-use them repeatedly. that could be hard to keep up with if you have a constantly pooping baby! I think they are a good option though and I like to think i'd try them in the future :)

How can you mothers afford them at £1 each,

£1 each! your shopping in the wrong shop or there Gold plated. £10 for a box of 50 or so from my local supermarket, Pampers or Huggies. Own brands even cheaper.:)

It was IIRC an add by Asda quoting their Huggies at £3.99 and Morrisons at £4.99. for 5

Terry nappies, oh please this is the 21st century.

This is 2008, things change, time to move on.

:)

Unless of course you are volunteering to wash my duaghters "terry" nappies in your sink or machine.

Han, I expect we all know meant reusable nappies.

Not sure why but I did a quick search, and Pampers Baby Dry nappies - Midi 156pk = £16.99 works out at just under 11p a nappy.

Ok terry nappy fans, how many of you wipe your backsides with something reusable?

Haha thanks Galaxy, iv had a bit of trouble with my posting today, my spellings been going out the window as well!

Thats different because we use toilet paper which as it is paper is degradable and doesnt sit around wasting away for 500 or so years like plasticky nappies do.

There's similar arguments going on about plastic bags atm...

Well strictly you can.....

Wouldn't want to though:gag::naughty:

or not bother with nappies

On a slightly related subject are 'Ladies products' biodegradable ?

Yep u can get biodegradable "products" although not all of them are. Obviously they only get used every so often though...lol

or would a bit of terry towling be okay for you?????

On second thoughts I'm off now......:help:

Ok i think thats enough! lol am having too many not very nice mental images!

My apologies for starting this thread Hannah which has caused you to have some not very nice mental images

Is this thread bio-degradable or is is just degrading as it goes:lol: !!!! I know that's probably not making sense but I don't care, I've had too much cider!

Ok, so newspaper isn't strictly speaking re-useable, but it is re-cycling and bio-degradeable! :p

I used to be a test baby for the first disposable nappies in the UK. My old dear reakons i really tested them well too :)
She cant remember the make but insisted she got the piccies out to show my kids, how we all laughed. Well except me.

Er just a side note but washing reuseable nappies is not better for the envronment because of the chemicals used to clean them - washing powder isnt good for the planet either!!!
