I know it's a long shot but my Google-fu is drawing a blank.

I have 4 hard drives in my PC. A 250Gb SSD for OS & Apps, a 40Gb SSD for VMs, and 2 500Gb standard drives for User data (Pics & music mostly). I seem to be constantly getting problems with the drives just disappearing off My Computer. Going into Device Manager and re-scanning will populate them again, but whilst the drive is offline, I can't access anything on the drive (can't use programs if C: goes down, can't see my pics if E: goes down). Occasionally the DVD drive also disappears. Interestingly (or oddly), if C goes down (which has the OS) I can still access Control Panel to bring up Device Manager.

First task was to check & reseat all the cables to the drives & motherboard. No improvement.
Then I backed everything up & did a clean re-install of Windows (7). The problem continued and my 2 external USB backup drives now also won't show up. Downloading drivers for motherboard & external drives does nothing.

I don't get any errors & there's nothing I can understand in Event Manager or in the SMART data from the disks themselves that makes me think there's a problem. Google suggests it's a SATA cable issue or a physical hard drive issue but with this happening on all my drives I doubt that. All I'm left with that's common to all drives is either the power supply or the motherboard. However both are decent, branded items. Both are, however, 4 years old.

Has anyone had anything like this before? Can anyone offer an educated guess as to the nature of the problem, or ways to identify it further?

Ian.

updated the chipset driver? anything changed before this started happening or is this since system build?

what is the rest of the system spec and power supply make/model/wattage?

im thinking either the mobo is faulty or the psu cannot supply enough juice.

It's a Corsair CX600 (600W) power supply with an Intel i5 2500 3.3Ghz CPU. Graphics card is Nvidia GTX660. The 2 external USB drives are externally powered. Also have an internally powered USB 3 PCI card. Everything was fine until recently. The only things of note changed on the PC are the most recent Windows update and a game update for War Thunder. However this is still happening with a clean install of Win7 (and no programs installed). Is there a way to see how much power your PC is drawing?

Try This....

Click on start > all programs > accessories > right click on command prompt and choose run as administrator

In the command prompt type the following:

diskpart

and then:

automount enable

and then:

exit

Close command prompt and re-boot your system

Let us know if this helps

600w should be fine for that.

id be inclined to run the system with just the C: drive and see if the problem occurs, then add drives one by one until the problem occurs.

do you let windows update install device drivers? personally id always go for manufacturer versions if so.

id still be tempted to download the latest chipset and USB3 driver.

If Windows can't find them, I manually do it. Finding the right drivers for stuff is a pain. I'll hit up the ASUS website for the latest chipset drivers and see how that goes. Have ordered a 1Tb disc to replace the 2 500Gbs as one of them has had 23,000 hours in service! It's from a very old PC... I'll probably remove the small SSD too and save it for a home theatre project, so that'll leave just the 240Gb SSD for OS & Apps and a (new) 1Tb data disk.

Also tried enabling automount.

Thanks for your help so far guys.

Well..... Update in case someone uses Google search to find this...

- I updated the chipset & USB drivers. Both were difficult to find on the ASUS website. (The USB drivers got my USB 3 ports working again)
- I ran the automount command
- I downloaded Acronis Drive Monitor (free) which was the only HD monitor tool that found problems on both the 500Gb disk and the Corsair 40Gb SSD. I've removed all the data from these disks and will be physically removing them when my 1Tb arrives.

In the last 24 hours I've not had one incident of drives going poof.

So I'm not sure exactly what's fixed it, only that it is fixed. Thankyou both for your help!

Ian.
