Our dishwasher has an annoying issue - the cutlery basket, on the bottom shelf, doesn't seem to be cleaned on each cycle. However, everything else on the bottom shelf and top shelf is cleaned properly.

I have cleaned out the dishwasher itself, tried cutlery standing up/down, checked and cleaned both sets of blades. Any other thoughts?

Everything on a Google search seems to only talk about dishwashers not cleaning at all, rather than a specific area.

The thing with cutlery is don't leave big chunks of food stuffs stuck to it

Second thing is do not jam pack the cutlery into its basket, it needs to be put in loosely for a wash to be effective

Our dishwasher also has an annoying issue. She gets me to do the dishes.

:D

No big chunks, and not jammed in, and still happening unfortunately.

another cause could be you are leaving the cutlery to long with food residue stuck to it before running the dishwasher

Just lick the cutlery before putting it in :)

What temperature are you using? Maybe too low, e.g. 35 celcuis?

I was thinking rinse residue off, but I guess licking works
Rinse when it has gone cold ;) or if the dog got in there first (no euphemism involved).

Anyone else think of this episode from Family guy?

Lol that is one thing in trying to avoid him to do. Mainly because his farts stink more than mine.

Then just don't let him fart on the cutlery

Does nobody do the washing up in the kitchen sink anymore?

Thanks for the replies so far, fun to read :)

This could be part of the problem, hadn't even crossed my mind...

Yep, my moneyboss uses that old tried & tested method, most of the time.

Because I don't wash up anywhere as much as she does, I think it best to use the dishwasher when it's my turn. Just to keep it fresh & in good working order you understand. :)

Put the cutlery in the sink with hot water and washing up liquid. Leave for 15 mins. Quick go over with a washing up brush and it's all clean :)

Back to the original question.

Make sure all the holes in the spray bars are clean

Make sure nothing can effect the rotation of the spray bars when the draws are in and the door shut.

Do you fill the machine during the day and then run it once at the end of the day. If you do you should run it on rinse after every part load, that will stop food drying during the day.

If all else fails just wash the cutlery in a bowl and leave the dish washer for the dishes.

:agree:

Have you tried just putting just the cutlery basket in an otherwise empty dishwasher and seeing what happens or moving the basket to different positions?

Failing that, it's a GoPro and waterproof light!

If the basket is at the front, move it to the back.
Ours does not clean the "front" cutlery very well when we run a 30 min wash.

Our new dishwasher has a cutlery drawer at the top, it's trickier to fill, but 'looks great' and seems to do a better job than the old basket.

If you do that, the ivory handles crack...
The high temperatures melt the glue on the handles. The machine will be using water at about 85 degrees celsius, almost boiling.

See if your dishwasher has a rinse cycle. An older basic model may only let you do one quick rinse cycle before you have to do a main wash, but a more advance model may let you do several quick rinse's before putting a full wash on.

Also what tablets are you using ? The main things stopping a dishwasher cleaning is the temperature of the wash cycle, the detergent used ( the tablets ) or the dishes having food caked on them for too long a period before cleaning.

For all the people who choose to wash by hand, a dishwasher uses far less water than running several sink loads of water to do several days worth of dishes, its a far far more efficient way to clean your crockery.

EDIT
Reading that last paragraph back that sounds really preachy. I was the one who actually enjoyed doing the dishes whilst watching the birds on the feeders. Then I got a water meter, read my dishwasher book and started using it instead of washing by hand. I was shocked how little water a eco model uses compared to filling the sink. :)

had the same model for 32 years, never had any complaints about how clean the dishes and cutlery were after washing. but we do have an occasional back up model, that isn't quite as good and a reserve model that generally needs a bit of encouragement to get going. Pretty pleased with mine. Energy efficiency is very good too. Oh in case you were wondering about the make(s) it Mrs. Mister & Miss.
