Discussion / idle chat thread (2022) Week 52 Showcase

Sorry to discuss this on here but I've sorted the job out with the council and he'll be at my house within the hour. That trap which kills Grey Squirrels the man that came yesterday wanted me to order one which would come from New Zealand for £250, how long would that take, plus wait for his builder to do a huge job of replacing facerboards etc. Woman on own am I, don't mind saying but I could sense trouble worse that the squirrels. When you can't sleep at night something is not good. Get a professional like the Gwynedd county council is what I should have done in the first place and have done. That's it, time to put the kettle on and get out with my camera and look for anything. Thanks all for the advice. :)

said he had to be careful setting it or he'd break his own fingers,
Absolutely, those and fen traps are to be used / set with extreme caution!

He is a charlatan and royally taking the p***. If he has a BPCA logo report him to them. If not it means he is NOT professionally qualified
I know you can't but if you did it yourself a Kania would cost about £50 and a cage trap around half the price.

Thanks all for the advice. :)
You're welcome :)

Another missed fog/mist shot opportunity this morning.
Stuck indoors self isolating in advance of an ECG booked for Tuesday.
So, my Old shot will likely be another small object.

Missed here as well. I had a shot in mind and the fog would have really set it off nicely, but my Wife was out, and I had to take my Daughter to a Gymnastics club. By the time I got back… no fog.

Good luck with the ECG.

I missed a parcel thanks to the fog. Hopefully being delivered on Monday. We had sun for most of the day.

Or some thing through the window, eg an elderly person or an old plane flying past. A vintage car passing on the road..:)

I kinda hope they find something (and then again, I hope they don't).

I've got a few ideas. Not sure there are any particularly old planes flying in & out of Heathrow these days...

I've already told Dave NO ....
Ah, yes sorry I see what you mean ( :coat: )

I hope the ECG goes according to plan (y)

Ah it's Sunday morning (Sunday is really the only day I can play photography due to work and family life) and it's raining. If it doesn't let up I'll have to find something old around the house to fulfill this week's challenge. How old does something have to be to qualify as old?

I was planning a walk around locally, visit some churches (seems to be a common idea) and take a few snaps, come home, purchase affinity and have a play this afternoon. Also need to photograph some things that look like letters for my photography course homework...how am I going to find something that looks like a Q lol

That's a good idea, but I think he wants us looking for shapes in the natural places, not ones I have made lol. You know like V shapes in trees and that sort of thing. Going to look like a right plonka walking around taking shots of odd shapes lol

What course are you doing: local, on line? I've often thought about doing a photography course and although I know most of the technical stuff my eye for a photograph is not what I would like it to be. My next door neighbour, now deceased, took much better pictures than I using very basic equipment because she had that eye. It may be one either has it or one doesn't but on the off-chance one can learn I might like to give it a go.

Local one. 10 week course and the chap is a professional photographer and lecturers at a local university on photography. It's £100 for the 10 week course and each lesson is 1.5 hours. Course is split first ten weeks beginner (learning what the buttons do). Next ten weeks is intermediate level (focusing on actually using the settings and exploring different types / styles of photography). Final 10 weeks is the advanced and you get to put a portfolio together and do an exhibition (don't know too much about that yet). What I like is you spend time discussing XYZ in lesson, break away to have a go, then get set homework to complete (on that weeks topic) that you send in to him.

Well I managed to get out for less than 1 hour before my 13 year old son decided to ruin everyone's afternoon by being (insert rude word for teenager here) and we had to come home. He is now sat on the sofa and I won't let him use any electronics for the rest of the day. That will serve him. Not much to choose from photo wise for this week now.

Old fashioned parenting?
:D
I'm not criticising BTW :)

I think a lot of kids (I am 39) now lack the basic levels of discipline (my own opinion) and technology, social media and all that has made it easier for them to be bone idle. I am pretty harsh at times, but I can't let a 13 year old, who just wants to go home to sit in his room and play Xbox with his mates on his headset ruin / control the day for everyone else. My mom would have killed me for behaving the way he did (basically decided he had, had enough walking, didn't want to be with us and turned around and headed back to the car. Put the phone down on me when I called him and that ruined it. We were heading to a coffee shop . McDs for them - his mates were online and he was in a grump that he wasn't). So now he can sit in silence, no phone, no nothing unitl bed. If he is that desperate to see his mates, he will sleep well and go running into school tomorrow to be with them.

In my next life I am coming back as a monk.....

Glad you find it funny.....honestly I could kill him at times
I'm a lot older than you, and I had one like that.
I can laugh now, he's married and someone else's problem :D

You have far more patience than I. I couldn't cope with children at all, still can't, so I let the ex-wife do all that while I went to live somewhere else. My kids are in their forties and I get on with them fine now (don't ask why I had children in the first place, it's a sore point).

Anyway, photography...

Still looking for something old (yes, I know I don't have to look far :(). So many things are old but I'm still trying to find that special something.

I have a 15 year old, and it continues to be tough, in so many ways. Good luck with yours! Enjoy the good stuff, and try to skip over the rest.

Is there an easier way to set up a linky?
I keep getting lost on step 3.

Only if I do it for you :p

I really can't explain it any easier ..
Highlight the word, by left click and drag
Click the chain links in the reply box and insert the URL that you require.
Get that by right clicking the post number you want to link to and paste that into the box.

I don't know about 'easier' for you, but for us as viewers what would be easier is if you linked directly to the post the image is on. It's not too bad now, but if you just link to the start of your thread, by the time it's on page 7, people will be less likely to click through and leave comments.

How do you do that? You see the post number to the right of your comment above (#306) right click on that and click 'copy link address'.

This will give you the url to link directly to the post in your thread that contains the images. Then you can add the word LINK in your post in the image thread.

Highlight that word click the chain icon above the post box, and paste in the URL you copied from the numbered post.

Like so (this will take you to your post above in THIS thread).

LINK

Or if you wanted it to link to your latest image (which is post #17 in your thread) you right click on post #17 in your personal thread, click "copy link address" and paste that URL to the image only thread.

It's tidier if you do it as a link over text, but not necessary as such.

So you can be tidy like so.

LINK To Peter's latest images.

Or just paste it in as a link without it being embedded in the text.

LINK To Peter's latest images.

Magic Kell. I've cracked it. Thanks for the excellent explanation.

If I look back at my first 52, it took me ages to get it right at all, and then work out a system that works for me.

I normally have to have three tabs open. Flickr, my personal thread, and the image thread.

  1. Go to personal thread.
  2. Edit thread name and say it's updated with Week XX and the theme - (and if it includes the technique - to make life easier for @LC2.)
  3. Make the post in my own thread, and paste in the flickr link to display the image. And post it.
  4. Copy the url for that post and keep that safe.
  5. Go to the main image thread and start a post saying Week XX - Theme.
  6. Highlight those words and paste the link back to my own thread - using the method above.
  7. Switch to Flickr and copy the image link again, then paste that into the main thread. And post that.
  8. Have a cup of tea.
It sounds ridiculously complicated, but like all other things, once you get used to it, it becomes second nature.

It's his rights to do what ever he wants and you are giving him a mental health issue. It would be funny, but they seem to believe it.

He will have more than mental health issues if he does it again

@Cobra can we have 'fashion models in the west end' as this week's theme please :)
You know the rules. A brown envelope stuffed with fivers to arrive no later than weds afternoon (y)

I checked on the scrolls, and it definitely says fashion models for next week ;)

You know what happens(ed) when a certain member used to try and second guess me ..
