Discussion / idle chat thread (2022) Week 52 Showcase

I just bought a new fleece in the sales and a mate pointed out that it looks like it's come from Star Trek.

Liking all the lateral thoughts around the theme without too much shoehorning (yet!)

Note to self... Shoot your own shot before looking at other people's take on the theme - while you may have the same idea, the chances of almost identical shots happening is about the same as a politician telling the truth...

When do we have to post an image in the main thread?
Think I will probably just go with my first image idea, run outa time for my other idea's and 2nd idea wasn't how I planned it to go.

When do we have to post an image in the main thread?
Preferably before the following Thursday's theme announcement,
or your'll be playing catch up :)

I've noticed with a new pair of shoes, that the linky takes me to his Flickr page, therefor no comments are possible. Why do we just not upload the photos from our own documents. Like attach files.

Because if you upload direct the image quality is degraded a little. When you upload via Flickr the quality is maintained.
Don‘t ask me why.

It'll be them pesky TP hoptomising algaerivvums trying to skimp on file size I reckon.

I don't understand this at all, there have been a couple of people not wanting to start their own threads.
The 52 challenge is a community not a submission for the FRPS.
(Unless of course they are just looking for hits on their flickr page, which is NOT the idea at all)

The idea is you start your own thread, to get feed feedback, check out other peoples submissions, and give ( at least some) feedback.
Its always been in the guidelines.
*4) One image per week’s theme to be posted on the main image thread. Post as many as you like in your own personal thread.*

If they aren't interested in joining in the community they should post in

Aledgidly.
This is raised a couple of times a year, and each time, it happens we get a few random people to compare flickr and posted images.
And there is never a difference.

I blame that snake.

I normally link out to Flickr as the upload image option doesn't allow big files. I tried to post a screenshot the other day and it told me even that was too big.

But in the first instance, there should really be a personal thread so that you can get critique, explain your thought process, actually take part.

@Kell I think it's wise to be careful how large a file you upload to Flickr. Some time ago I remember reading on here that a TP photographer found his image for sale as a backdrop on Amazon - it had been lifted from Flickr. Amazon did take it down.

Also, my screenshots are usually not small files - sometimes 6MB+. so I have to downsize those to share them.

In the choice of theme's it says Jan / Feb, is it that another photo with Tech is needed.
Its all explained in the guidelines. #5
The technique lasts for 2 months, over that period at least 1 image should contain the technique.

Morning folks, hope all is well. I've seen some of the photos in the main thread and they are great. I wondered if anyone could give me some more tips on the zooming technique shown on the newspaper and iPhone submissions. I've tried this myself but must be going wrong somewhere as my attempts just look like a blurry mess. I have one zoom lens for my S5 the kit 20-60 mm. So I focus on a single point and then take the picture and zoom in, or zoom out? Any help appreciated.

That’s pretty much it.

You’ll need a relatively long exposure to make it work successfully. And a tripod.

So probably a narrow aperture and low ISO to get a shutter speed of several seconds.

As a ‘for instance’. You use a six second exposure. You leave the camera alone for four seconds, to get a clear portion of the image. Then use the zoom ring to pull focus and get the Star Wars Lightspeed effect.

I know how I missed #5 because I skipped over all that and went straight to the Linky bit. Its as clear as crystal now. Thank you for explaining. :$

And a timely reminder, those that haven't yet got their week 01 submissions in,
your'll be playing catch up, after tomorrow :)

Ah tripod, that is where I've been going wrong then lol. Something to try over the weekend when I have more time. Thank you

Just some tests I did over the weekend. Wasn't necessarily happy with any - certainly not enough to submit.

But things you may want to consider.

  • Having the focal point dead centre or off centre makes a difference.
  • Experiment with both zooming in and zooming out.
  • If you don't have a tripod, it might might also be worth experimenting with a flash on a long exposure (first and second curtain). If you use it second curtain, it can make it look like the object is leaving a trail in its wake. Use it first curtain and it has the effect of something zooming away from you. ETA - depending on which way you zoom of course. ;)

2.5 seconds, f/9, ISO 100.

An old fashioned trombone type zoom can work better than a twist type and with both (to some extent!), the older and more worn the better - they're not as stiff. As solid a support as possible helps too. Have a play and see what works with your kit!

Cheers folks, I've got a tripod that's no issue. Just need to work out this first and second curtain stuff

Probably not necessary if you're using a tripod. It just means that the flash either fires when the shutter opens (first curtain) or just before it closes (second curtain).

So you either 'freeze' the action at the start of your exposure or at the end.

Good explanation here:
