I'm watching the space and to be honest its not doing an awful lot for me.
Who ever took that picture of space is rubbish, not even a star or moon.

There, thats my critique

Ok ok.....

It's a competition all about critique.

Doesn't do it for me.

Can't see anything.

Or is that the purpose of the exercise?

:shrug::naughty:;)

Nice competition
Really like your style

What do I win?

:D

Competition launch date is 31st August to start 1st September and to run for the month.......

They better be bloody good, asking us to watch this space for 4 days!!!!

:D

It doesn't actually say you have to watch it for four days though. It simply says watch it. You can watch it for a few seconds then move on and watch something else.

Well if we're going to be pedantic, it just says "watch this space" with no time specific at all
Now it seems we dont have to watch this space at all, just pop back in 4 days, unless that is, you upset the mods, get booted for your cheek, then we'll never know
So, I'll wander off casually whistling innocently

I cant help being a nosey beggar tho

Some people put a great deal of time and effort into giving feedback so this is their chance for some recognition. :D

So in a nutshell, critique such as -

Lovely shot
Wonderful composition
Beautiful colours
Wow wish my camera would do that
Lovely shot, you have some skills
Excellent image

Won't cut the mustard!
That's got to at least cut the entry list down by around 90% already!

:D

I don't agree,the P&P is nice and neutral,how it should be.

That is the whole point. I've spent half an hour before now explaining in intricate detail why a photo is good but also how it can be improved and what would make it stand out plus what PP I would do then someone else has said "nice shot" and the OP has thanked mr nice shot and ignored my comment. We are trying to get people to THINK about where they post photos and if they do post in the critique section then they must expect critique. We are also wanting to get people to stop with the nice shot posts and ACTUALLY GIVE CRITIQUE. We are going to put together a training thread on giving critique. You don't need to be an expert but all critique should follow these sort of patterns....

Shot x.

I like xxx about this shot and I dislike xxx about this shot.
xxxx is good because of xxxx and but it could be improved by xxxx.
In my opinion you could improve the shot by xxxxxx which would help xxxxx

Giving a comment and explaining why is the prerequisite thing to creating top quality critique and this is what we want. When I joined the forum I would post a picture and listen whilst to the feedback and then use that in order to improve my shots. We want to get back to that.

Sounds good

A thread on giving citique would be worthwhile but (semi serious) I think a thread on receiving critique would be equally beneficial.

Yes this is something that causes issues. If people just want others to blow smoke up their bottoms then they should just post them on facebook or flicker so their friends who have no idea what they are talking about can go oooo thats good. If people want to improve their photography then post in the critique section and listen to the critique. Not all critique will be right, some might be just plainly wrong or harsh but there are ways to reply to that too!

Yes we agree. There are some people who take great pride in giving seriously good critique and others who really are great photographers who will say something is rubbish and not say why.

Posting an ill conceived snap shot in critique is likely to get a bad response though.

I think a lot of that has to do with family shots. When it's photos of your (generic) kids, people tend to be a little emotional and don't take to critisism too well, as though it's personal.

That is actually the point, if they don't want critique then post in the fluffy kittens section.

I've lost count of how many times this has happened to me now. Hard not to think **** it, won't bother next time.

I whole heartedly agree about TAKING crit as well as giving it properly. As you say, some critique is... well... not amazing shall we say, but when a lot of effort gets thrown back in ones face, that soon kills the desire to help others.

Think this could be just what this place needs
I'm a struggling photographer, always looking to improve and get crucial advice
I've just about given up posting shots here, as they often go unnoticed, or get the dreaded nice shot comment, which is nice for a while, but if we're going to improve, we need all levels of comments and skill insight
Whether it works or not remains to be seen, but good effort chaps/chapesses

^Agreed.

I consider myself a newbie and one of the reasons I enter the POTY competition is to force myself into new territory and make myself try something that I would otherwise not even think about.

In an anonymous way, I get feedback through the votes but I would really appreciate feedback that helps me take my photography to the next level by explaining why and improve my thinking to get that better shot next time.

couple of questions darren

a) is there a limit on how many times we can nominate - ie is it one nomination per person ?

and

b) are we allowed to nominate mods or are the green team exempt from entry - TBY gives fantastic crit , but i'm not going to waste everyones time nominating him if theres no point

The rules state 4 per day. This is to stop someone literally nominating everything to guarantee a win.

The mods will be voting on the winner so no we can't be voted for but an entry pointing one out might give that mod a warm tingly feeling.
