I am trying to import my pics from disc to lightroom, all was going well when I get this error message



I am not importing the files to this hard drive, I am using a seperate hard drive and cannot understand why this is happening.
Any help would be gratefully accepted.

Windows uses temporary files which it stores on your route drive. This is what is causing your problem by the look of it.

You really need to clear some space.

Search for files larger than 500Mb and see if you need them all
Empty your recycle bin
Boot in safe mode and delete the contents of the windows/tmp or winnt/tmp directory
Uninstall software you are not using.
Write anything to disc you dont need and delete it
Reduce the cache size in internet explorer

etc etc
 
Just to follow on from cawasaki, are you using a path to a drive that's not there anymore?

LR remembers where you last exported to, is it possible that something has changed. Try reselecting your destination folder on the export drive again.

I have just returned from holiday and was loading several discs full of pics into lightroom. I changed the previous destination folder so as to have a fresh catalogue of pics for the holiday pics, the drive I am importing them to is a seperate drive to C: I am going to have a closer look into it shortly and shall let ypou know what happens.

ps Even on C: there is over 5gigs worth of space.
 
Well I copied the files from the cd to pc and Lightroom has imported them now.
No Idea what happened, but at least it's sorted this way.

pps I have now managed to copy files from another load of cd's without any trouble..... maybe a glich on that one particular cd, maybe :)
 
Even stranger goings on, now I am having trouble again, lightroom goes through the motions of copying to a new location etc, when it gets to the end it says all photos could not be copied as files could not be read, but when I once again copy them from the disc to desktop, lightroom then imports properly.

Looks as though LR is having trouble reading the disks, but copying to the desktop seems to solve the problem as you say WIERD.

I did have a similar problem last year. Fortunately ( for me) I had a second external DVD drive on my computer. This was a slower one than that fitted on the Dell. Some disks written on the Dell couldn't be read on the drive that created them. They could on the "older" drive.

Turned out the DVD drive was failing. Replaced the drive ( or rather Dell did) and problem went away.

thanks for the advice Chappers. I am gutted again though as three of the discs I thought I had copied files to are empty.
Never again will I trust my pics to discs I do not know their origin.
I could tell you the reason why I had to use unknown discs, but I would probably borr you to death and make loads of spelling mistakes. :)

Don't knock yourself out. A few years ago I used "unlabeled" disks. Had loads of write errors and bad disks. Not unlike you. I now archive off to an external hard drive, from my laptop. OK it's a bit more expensive, but to lose images is more so.

A portable photo storage device is a loooot cheaper, a loooot easier to schlepp around, and a loooot less likely to be stolen.

Or how about an iPod with camera connector? Slips into your pocket, which a laptop doesn't.

OTOH, flash memory – a.k.a. solid state memory – has never been cheaper. And solid state memory is the most reliable digital data storage method around. So you could also simply get a couple of extra memory cards.
