Recently got myself a partner, and well, went to the Isle Of Wight for a nice day on Sunday...kinda turned into a very negative day. Had an argument, and because I was so totally upset, I put my camera bag down and that was that... I tend to act on impulse in such situations because of my bipolar. He had gone into a pub, I dumped the bag outside and walked off. So now I am left without my beloved 40D and a very angry father who has had to put some extra money into my account to help me replace it. My partner, feeling responsible is also going to help cover the costs. I lost the body, both memory cards, my 28-135 USM and the damn 70-200 F4 L

I have no idea the cheapest to replace this lot right now. I got the originals off ebay, but with a USA warranty. This time, I need to get it insured etc.

No idea where to start. :(

We all do daft things in the heat of the moment or after an argument, you won't be the first or last to lose something after a bout of stupidity!!

Bad luck. Not sure insurance will cover such an incident if it were to happen again.

I've got stuff from Kerso on here from the US and its worked well.

Did email the hampshire police, but had no reply yet. Not sure who I would call, just in case it was a decent person who found it. Guarantee it was stolen and sold off though.

Got no home insurance... live in a small flat and never looked into that sort of thing

Ahhh thats awful, i got my gear covered up to £3,500 on the home insurance...

So what happens from here ?

I gather my resources and decide whether to go the ebay route again, or to get locally in a camera shop. I still have my two Tokina lenses and the battery grip but nothing else.

Seen one on ebay with the 17-85 and a 10-22 lens which interests me, but the seller has only got 1 feedback thus far.

I really sympethise with you. I did the same a couple of weeks ago. Went to a cafe & left my camera bag on the next seat. I realised when I got back to my car ( only 200yds ) & legged it back, the camera was still there. Was I relieved. Hope you get some new kit soon
:amstupid:

that's a sad tale.

Contact, by phone, not only the pub but also any local shop, the local post office and the local plod. This is the Isle of Wight and, with apologies to anyone from there, they do live in another age. It is quite possible that your kit was handed in.

When you go about replacing it, can I suggest you take great care and avoid egay. The last thing you need right now is an auction scammer.

Wow, so sorry to hear that, i had a terrible incident in Sydney where i left my Pentax k10d still attached to a internet cafe computer that i had plugged it into!! we realised about a half mile down the road and Liam (my partner) ran back, fortunately it was still there... so scary though!

I do hope the police have it, if not then my condolances

My equipment has become a part of my Building & content insurance. Any chance you could claim it from your insurance company?

OMG!

I kinda know where you're coming from as Laura is Bi-polar and has done some very 'interesting' things when on the move between mania & depression.

I'd be phoning the local police station to where you 'lost' your gear. You never know, there may be some kind hearted soul around.

After that, I'd be keeping a very close eye on ebay and any 40d's with related kit that come up for sale in that area I'd be investigating with a few tactful emails asking about serial numbers etc. I don't know if it's the same with canon, but nikon print the serial either on the box or on the guarantee slip in the box.

I hope you get it all back.

Don't beat yourself up too much please? Attachment to anything & everything only brings suffering in the end. Everything is transient in life and our refusal to accept the fact results in much, much pain.

Have a big hug

At least you still have your partner and at the risk of sounding cheesy, a big hug from him is gonna be better than any camera/lens combo in the world.

True Gandhi.
I did have one day where I felt a lot of anger and resentment towards him, which in turn made me angry at myself for having become so attached to my camera, but I suppose, the camera has become an extension of myself and helpful in expressing myself too...my creative outlet. I am on incapacity, and I suppose, it gave me a purpose and sense of achievement. Without it, I am feeling quite lost and useless, tbh. The boyfriend did feel terrible about it and still gets very upset about it, and feels responsible, *** I do keep reminding him it was my impulsive reaction that resulted in the loss. At the time, I was so upset and confused by the sudden situation that all ceased to matter to me.

I have emailed the police, and had an email back asking the make and model etc which I have given...but I have little hope. I checked the pub at the time just in case it had been handed in.

I have no home insurance. I privately rent a flat and never looked into that sort of thing as I really know very little about it.

My dad has put some money in the bank for me, but I do not know how much. Likely just enough to cover the body but not much else. At least, I want to replace the body, kit lens, memory cards and the crumpler bag I had bought for it.

Thanks all for the replies, suggestions and support.
I always deeply regret this stuff after...feel like I have lost a limb.

What about asking to put up some notices of lost/stolen goods in the area.. Reward of £150.. it would be worth that to get your stuff back maybe.. and if someone has been showing off their new camera it might be enough to get their audience to report it?

Yeah, the problem is, I lost it on the IOW, and I live in Southampton.
My ex, however, lives there so I might see if he can help.
Meanwhile, I am racking my brains for the most cost effective way to get the 40D body back and the 17-85 or 28-135 lens. I still have my Tokina 100mm macro and my Tokina 80-400mm. But how the hell I will replace the 70-200 F4 L, I don't know.

I have seen someone selling a 30D with 10-22 and 70-300 locally with a kenko 2x extender for 800 quid, but don't think it is worth it.

What gets to me is how dishonest and lacking in conscience human beings out there can be. They don't give a damn about the heartache to the person whose property they just walk off with. All that matters is what they can steal for free. I would instantly hand in anything I found and cannot understand the mentality of those who would not.

...not sure what to say to that.

I second that.

Do you mind me asking if the argument was photography related?

If not, why would you put your bag down and walk off...

Unless you are bipolar, you would not understand.
When there is any conflict, I react on impulse and feel as if my world is collapsing, and at that moment, everything else ceases to matter until balance is restored.

If someone asked me what bipolar meant before this thread I would have thought it was a sexual tendency of sort.. Sounds like a bit of a headache to live with.. (for you mostly).

Away to do some wiki reading :)

Headache is one word. Manic Depression is the original term for it. Common among creative types, supposedly. Stephen Fry has it, for example, if one could call him creative. Either way, it is the first time it has cost me so dearly.

Ahh thats not good at all. I hope you get a new camera sorted soon!

Is this theft?

Or...

As they say in junior school...

Finders, keepers, losers, weepers!

If you found 5p on the floor would you hand it in? A childs mitten? A camera lens? A whole bag worth of equipment?

I personally would feel very guilty, but having been a victim of crime a number of times, I might be tempted (despite the guilt) to think that for once it was payback time. Woohoo, my lucky day! Makes up for the uninsured driver that cost me £000's etc.

Gawd, I'm going to be a right bitter old man by the time I'm 60! ;)

Do people generally have contact details in their camera bags in case this happens?

They certainly should. Then if you lose it, and it's not recovered, it's deemed (by insurance companies and by the police) to be theft.

Graelwyn, What Tokina lenses do you have left?

I didn't mean it in such a way that you'd feel offended by it, so I appologise if I have done so.

I knew what bipolar was, but I don't have it, nor does anyone I know, so it's like anything else really, if you don't have any contact around it, you don't tend to read up on it.

Good post.
Just what I was thinking......

If you leave your car unlocked, open and with the keys in the ignition, I dare say the insurance company wouldn't pay for the theft if they found out. True, it's still theft, but I suppose it's down to the smallprint of your policy. I mean, sure, this camera will have been stolen, but if it was due to neglect then the insurers aren't going to want to front the bill in this kind of scenario.

Grae,

If you have a functioning camera and just 1 lens then you can still great photo's! It doesn't matter if it's a 350d or a 1dsmk3, what matters is putting all this behind you and going out there with the intention to get some great shots despite what's happened.

Try and turn it around!

You're absolutely correct. I'm not bipolar and so don't understand, hence my initial post. I'm still not sure what you're looking for in this thread. I don't mean to sound offensive, ignorant or rude and understand that it may appear that way but I'm confused. Are you looking for advice or sympathy or both?

I used to go out with a girl who was Bi - polar. Believe me, it is very difficult as a partner to deal with. When it kicked in all reason goes out the window. You have to experience it to believe it. I think the most difficult thing to understand is the fact that the person knows they have it, knows when it is going to kick in, knows what they are like during an episode and knows what happened when things have calmed down. So you would think they would be able to prevent it happening in the first place. They can't and is very difficult to live with. Good luck with getting your kit sorted Graelwyn.

I was very interested to read of your bipolar condition and wondered in what way is it treated ?
