hi guys, hope you can help. I'd like advice on removing the rain marks from the window. I am a novice with PP and I use gimp although I can usually manage if you can explain the steps...

thanks in advance

OK, I had to download Gimp to see what it could do. Very quick try resulted in this: Added benefit of taking distractions away?

I just duplicated the layer, selected the window and masked it off, then applied blur. Very rough at the minute, I'll have another go and list the steps involved later when I've got some time. Would benefit from more blur and feathered selection I think.

wow thanks Stephen. I'm still learning layer masks and although I can apply the mask I couldn't think of how to fix the problem, I thought of blur but didn't want it to look artificial. you've done a great job. thanks so much. I won't be able to try until sunday but if I get stuck I will post back here

Personally I'd just blur the whole background very slightly, the window doesn't really add to your subject.

could I use the smudge tool?

Not really. The smudge tool doesn't distort in a uniform fashion. I've done a little vid to show the masking / blurring process. Its not very good and I forgot to feather the selection, but you're welcome to see it here :)
