ok ok im panicking. my s5 pro arrived (wayyyy) BUT attached a lens to have a look through viewfinder while battery charges and it looks really dark and nasty. initially i thought perhaps id forgotten to take film off something somewhere so went back through the booklet but cant find anything. im sure it must be something straightforward* and once i get the battery charged ill have another look but any ideas?

*like it's a dud

That's not a dirty sensor. You can only see the state of your sensor once it has recorded an image.

Let your battery charge and have a look once you get it functioning. You might have to give the lens a clean. The other part that might show up in the viewfinder is the mirror. It actually swings out of the way when you take a pic so don't worry too much about it.

yeah can see what i assume is the mirror through the viewfinder, lens isnt an issue ive put them on another body and its all hunky dory, cheers though reassuring reply :)

It has an "electronically enhanced" viewfinder/focusing screen. Get your battery in there and all will be well....

Reason that when you look through the viewfinder it is dark and looks dirty us that you do not have the battery in. I hasmd the same thing with my D200. As soon as the battery was in all was fine.

The viewfinder won't look right unless there's a battery in there, even if the camera's turned off.

It's probably the same on your D40! Take the battery out and look through it.

^^^^^^^
Curse you all for posting while I was on the phone!
