Bessie was a jazz./ blues singer back in the 20's. I have a version somewhere of her singing 'Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out" with a then unknown young Louis Armstrong backing her on trumpet. The recording is as scratchy as Hell but it's generally agreed her rendering has never been bettered.
