Bessie was a jazz./ blues singer back in the 20's. I have a version somewhere of her singing 'Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out" with a then unknown young Louis Armstrong backing her on trumpet. The recording is as scratchy as Hell but it's generally agreed her rendering has never been bettered.

Bessie's one of my major influences in my singing. Bessie and Etta. The best.
