Next month is my *gulp* 50th birthday, it's also the better half's birthday 2 days before so we're thinking of an overnight stay in a nice country hotel/restaurant. We live in Bedfordshire and, as it's only for 1 night, we don't want to have to travel too far (no more than, say, 2 hours in the car).

Anyone have any recommendations? I'll be doing an online search but it would nice to hear of any personal reccomendations.

Go for 2 nights, cant see or do anything just going for 1, by the time you check in (usually after 2pm) and get unpacked its time for dinner, a couple of pints then its time for bed, after breakfast its time to pack as you have to be out by 10am, waste of money in my book.

This :agree:. At least you can have a good drink on your first night there:beer: nothing more important than beer time.

The point is to spend the day out and then get to the hotel late afternoon/early evening for dinner, then stay over and check out and spend te day elsewhere before going home. The extra night would just be a repeat of the previous one.

Would be doable but alas there's no rom at the Inn. :(
 
How about Flitwick Manor? Or have you already done it to death as a home from home? We haven't been for a few years and apparently their standards fell but have now been restored.

Importantly there are ground floor rooms, which are the lovliest in the hotel and which open directly onto the gardens. Last visit, we bagged the honeymoon suite which even included a whirlpool bath!

The Grove has a wonderful eat-all-you-can gourmet buffet in its Greenhouse Restaurant which is great value - best of all, if you make a long afternoon's lunch of it and then get yourself driven home! (y)
 
What are you looking for... food, shopping, sights, history... city in day and country evening or just country?

Cambridge could be too close, but good shops, pubs, great food (a friend owns http://www.restaurant22.co.uk/menus - great food and lovely service, not massive portions but excellent quality cooking and the guinness bread is amazing!). Museums, sights, great pubs (pint shop if you are into real ale, cambridge brewhouse excellent too).

Something a bit 'olde world' is Long Melford/Clare/Cavendish/Lavenham in Suffolk - villages with character.

Alveston Manor Stratford upon Avon....they also have a celebration Bubbles & Balloons offer :)

Should fall inside your 2 hour drive time limit (y)

It's just for a leisurely wander and lunch, then the meal & overnight stay, neither of us are really into shopping. Suffolk huas been mentioned here a few times here.

Off the wall idea. Get the Eurostar and have a night in Paris instead? No driving involved so you can get gazebo'd without any issue :)

Or get a direct flight from Luton as it is 1h 20 minutes rather than just over 2 hours on Eurostar.

I actually did think of that but physical issues mean that I can't even get into London to even get on the Eurostar at the moment.
 
And it's sorted! Should have known that Sue's 20 odd years as a researcher would come in handy.

It's a little further thanm 2 ours but not a real issue. Excellent reviews on Trip Advisor and a good deal for £159 which includes a 4 course meal and breakfast. It also means we can take the coastal route back and stop off at my Parents in Essex.

A nice little travel lodge just outside Hockliffe,
Handy for Whipsnade zoo too :)

I know someone "in the trade" I maybe able to get you a friends and family discount too :p
