I've just transferred my website hosting to a new company, so my mailboxes are now with them. My mailboxes are still registered in Thunderbird at the old server, when I change the server details will all my old emails vanish? They are synchronised, so theoretically they are downloaded, but will they get deleted once I connect to the new host?

If your email is IMAP you should be OK

As with any major changes take a back up first

If the old server is still active and you have access to the new one you can see what happens. It should keep them but I wouldn't lay a lot of money on it!

When I've used imap they've gone but I tend to copy all emails into local folders rather than relying on any sync facility.

Yes old server is still active, I haven't shut down the account yet in case something does go tits up. The DNS changes haven't propagated yet so Thunderbird can't find the new mail server at the moment.

I'd copy the lot into local folders. That way you have everything just in case.

OK well the DNS has propagated, and Thunderbird refuses to connect to the new server for accounts where I've updated the settings in Thunderbird. Create a new account in Thunderbird and let it auto detect the settings and it works fine, even when they're the exact same settings. It won't even connect when changing the server details back to the old host for the existing accounts

Anyway, it has allowed me to copy all the emails from the inboxes on the old accounts to the new accounts which is nice, but it won't let you do anything with subfolders. again. Oh well, it's still nicer to use than Outlook.

As recommended above. I would seriously recommend to have some offline (local) folders and copy stuff in here except for the stuff that really needs to be available from any device.
