Right then, payday looks as if it's going to be a good one, I've got the opportunity to do two things I have really wanted to do for some time but the questions which one? I have the option of buying 70-200 which I wanted for so long or going on holiday somewhere like the northern lights for five days, which would you do?

That's one only you can answer. I have a 70-200 and absolutely love it but I also know I would love to see the Northern Lights :)

Northern lights

Northern lights for me as well. Hope to persuade the MuchBeloved about doing a cruise sometime next year in the hope of seeing them.

Di

Northern lights too. They are supposed to be the best or 50 years or something.

Grrr was hoping at least someone was going to say lens...

I ahve spotted a 5 day break for approx £500 slim chance I could do both if I was careful!

My heart says lights but hate traveling alone (how sad is that) and I have been hankering for a 70-200 for ages...

Northern Lights. As has been said, it's due to be an excellent year for them. I'd trade my 70-200L for a trip up there...

That sounds good.............. Got a link?

Do the lights. I've seen them a few times myself and trust me, it's worth it. The aurora borealis is hands down the most incredible thing I've ever seen.

Make sure you go to a location with a good chance of seeing them. This means going somewhere that's in the middle of nowhere.

Go on, you know you want to. ^_____^

Hmmmmm, an awesome place with a half decent lens or sat at home with a new, fancy lens and nothing worth taking pictures of...

If you go away you might be constantly thinking about the great shots you could have taken if you had the new lens.
If you buy the lens you might regret not going away.
How about buy the lens but save really hard for the trip away? At least then when you do go away you've got the best of both worlds.

Ive seen the lights a few times but nothing like pictured here. I do love them but id still go for a lens to be honest. Trecking all the way up noth in Norway, i did it for work a few months back, never again, 5 bloody flights to get there lol

Where were you planning on going to see them?

I would have thought the northern lights would be shot far better with a wide angle than a 70-200!

Has to be both  just do it  if you buy one you will wonder what the other would have been like ;)

Lolls, like the way you thinking I'm not sure the budget will stretch to both But we will see.

I would go for the lens. You've got it then + you can do anything with it again and again. You can always save up again for the trip. It's not going anywhere!

....maybe if you could have a chat to Julian....

......pay for the trip for him, have his lens and then buy a trip for yourself too so you can go with Julian and you're no longer travelling alone.....job done:D

Hmm, , Julian, is it a mk2, how old and what condition? Would be plenty of change from selling the lens lol. Sods law one sold in the classifieds the other day but I need to wait til the 25th before I know what is hitting my account lol.

Is there somewhere else you can see the Northern Lights from that is cheaper than the deal you've found so far?

Do the trip and hire the lens. Then you can buy it later :)

I wouldn't want to hire the lens, I've borrowed it once and absolutely love it! If I borrowed it again I would regret not having it...

Buy the Sigma 70-200 EX II instead and do both. (if your after an f/2.8 that is).

Sorry the Light...:D

I saw them a few times when I was stationed in Norway in the forces and, well, they were amazing.

I assume you'll be taking another lens...sssoooo, don't forget to lift your eye from the camera and look at the light a few times.

Enjoy and post some photographs.

Cheers.

As long as they have sorted out the coating problems, mine when :(,lost a lot of money on it.
Now have the Nikon :)

Mines had 2 years pretty constant use and still looks pristine!

It was a problem,on some of the lens, only noticed it when i went to trade it in,for the Nikon one, cost £140 to fix.

But in the end got the Nikon one, hopefully yours is not one of them :)

Seems ok so far, touch wood!

I think they have sorted the issue now.

Christ, well some more info through from work and absolutely everything maybe on hold for a while, this year is turning out to be a joke!

I'd go for the trip to see the lights, despite having a similar dilemma a couple of years back, where I chose the 5dmkii over going away for a week somewhere nice.!

What about seeing the N-lights in Scotland instead? Cheaper than Norway, if even less reliable. My folks live in Banchory/Drumoak (nr Aberdeen) and it's famed for regular sightings of the lights up there (tho as a kid I was never bothered enough to go out at 2am to try and see them so its still on my list of things to see)

Mark.
