Yes
At the weekend I took the camera along and took some pics of a local event where my wife and her work colleagues were competing.

I posted the pics at 550px width in my Flickr account and basically if they are there imho, then, at that resolution, anyone can have them.

I was asked via my wife today if I could burn a DVD with the RAW files so that they can use the images on their website.

No mention of payment.

My feelings are that they should pay.

What do you reckon?

My feelings are this-does your wife feel they should pay. Would it look good for her job to give them away?

if not charge them

Why do they want the RAW files if they're just for web use?

I had considered that. Though setting a president, by giving stuff away may lead to me being asked to do other things for free. My wife doesn't get paid enough for both our working time.

Why do they want the RAW files if they're just for web use?

My thoughts exactly.

I think a small payment would not go a miss in this case...as you said they may like your work to the point you will get more in the future. This is a chance for you to show off the quality of your work. But you own the copy right and to give away the raw file seems over the top to me.

Charge them dammit! No way should they be getting the RAW files :cuckoo:

put a little copyright on them with the link to your website if you have them

as its your wife nd her work then i dont think you can charge really unless stated beforehand

I think its a bit cheeky asking them for free. the fee doesnt have to be a massive one but by the way they are talking they want them for more than just website use!

why not ask your wife who to contact, tell them you can't provide the raw images as they are an unfinished product but you can provide them with a CD of web quailty jpegs, that will be credited to you (watermark or whatever) for a small price to cover costs?

Well, I think most people's views are the same.
Asking for the RAW files seems a bit confusing (assuming they are for web use ONLY).
You should at least be credited and I would think a payment of some sort should be deserved.

You have given up your time to photograph this event and also have used petrol to get there (assuming you drove :)), so I would have thought it would be good manners (if anything) to show their appreciation of using your photos.

I wouldn't give the RAW files but issue them with web sized JPGs
I would ask for a credit as well.

As for payment - depends on the size of the company and how many brownie points it would earn you or your wife - but certainly payment of some sort would not be unreasonable. This is one reason for keeping full size images in your control so if they need more at a later date you have control.

Thanks all for your comments.

I'll let you know the outcome.

I've been considering this on and off all afternoon at work (its been busy as you can tell ;) )

and I wonder if by RAW files they mean raw files. How many folks outside of photography will have heard of RAW as a type of file? I think they are after the finished files not the RAW (but still charge them ;) )

never give raw files. if they want web sized images perhaps inquire directly to they about which ones they want and provide them those exact ones...if its a commercial site i'd suggest asking for payment, it can't hurt and as mentioned above its your time and effort gone into it so why not at least recover some/all/beyond the cost of it should it be used on the web for others to gain by it?

They have Photoshop so I guess they might know one from the other? But I don't know for sure.

Offer to supply a few choice images but only if you can shoot the next event as the official photographer for a fee.

If they say yes, give them a few pics to start with. If they say no decline, politely or otherwise.

Of course, if you have no intention of making a living from photography you have nothing to lose so give them away
but please spare a thought for those who do make their living from photography.

I do indeed intend to make a living from photography.

Having been self employed for many years, I give nothing away without due reason. :)

They're obviously trying the "You don't get if you don't ask" card. They probably expect you to say no, and quite rightly so. Either supply watermarked images suitable for the web, which you'll gladly do for free. Or, if they want RAW, charge.

make them pay. There your images and you put your time into it. People expect photos for free now, and like most things, your doing them a service in providing images. I wouldn't give them the raw images, even if they did pay.
