I want to upgrade from a compact digital camera to an SLR and have set aside a budget of around £500. Ideally i'd like one that records high quality videos as well as superior pictures; both are equally important to me. Does anyone have any suggestions?

The Nikon D5000 and the Canon EOS 500D are the closest you're going to get to £500 movie DSLRs.

Don't forget you also need to be happy holding them and using them, pop along to a local shop and have a hold and play around, see if one feels nicer to you than another, see which controls fall more intuative for you. Don't know what the difference is (or cost) but the Canon 550D is out.

Good luck with your search.

Don't forget the D5000 doesn't have a focusing motor. Afs or similar lenses only will autofocus. J (no affordable nifty fifty option).
