Digital Point and Shoot for BIG hands?

Hi everyone

Wonder if anyone has any recommendations? My father in law is a farmer with hands like shovels. He and the mum-in-law like to take snaps, but they are certainly not serious photographers. For some reason he's got it fixed in his mind that he wants to buy a digital camera. I don't know why, but he's the sort of guy who's hard to dissuade and I want to at least head him off at the pass and recommend something he can actually use (before he buys something useless!) They are both pretty old with no computer, so I can only presume they'll take the camera down to Jessops or somewhere similar and get the pics printed off.

Anyway, as I say, the old man has huge hands, so he may find small (and close together) buttons fiddly. They are 'happy snappers' :) so nothing sophisticated required. Does anyone have any bright ideas for a basic digital P&S, with few, but large (well-spaced?) buttons, etc? I'd really welcome any ideas, because I'm struggling!

Digital cameras tend to be very small even for non spade like hands, the only advice I can think would be useful is to tell him to go to Jessops and try various models to see if he can find one he can use easily.

Hi, Steep,

Thanks for the quick answer. I'd love to send him to Jessops, but doubt very much that he'll go. He can be a real knuckle head at times (though he's a really nice guy) - drives my wife bonkers! I thought my best bet was to volunteer to buy it for him; that will stop him buying it from Aldi (! his first comment) and perhaps stop him wasting 120 quid (his second comment) on something unsuitable. If all else fails, I planned to try Jessops myself, but I figured someone out there might have a suggestion! (Someone with spade-like hands, presumably! ;))

Anyway, thanks for the help, it is appreciated.

I keep hearing good comments about the kodak range of point it and press cameras. Some look pretty chunky as they don't seem have reinvested in new fashionable tiny designs for a long time now.

Not only are they supposed to be very good but are often pretty cheap and have docking station thingys and printers you can use them easily with. Could be useful for presents to come. :)

Many thanks. I'll take a look at some Kodak cameras - you've just reminded me that my very first camera was a Kodak point and shoot when I was about 10 years old! Blimey, things have moved on since then (1970!)

Top tip and much appreciated. Good idea about the 'expansion possibilities' - bizarrely, though, these Cumbrian farming folk don;t seem to go in for much present giving. Perhaps I can show them how that's done as well! ;)

Cheers

Tell him Jessops have a sale on 6 inch nails ;)

Tell him Jessops have a sale on 6 inch nails ;)

 That might just do it!

Actually, I spoke to him this evening - I was worried he might do something 'pre-emptive' and told him not to do anything rash - I said I'd take him to a camera shop in the local town and we'll see what they think. He seemed pretty much up for it which is great. That said, I've just looked at the Kodak C613. It looks like just the job for what they want and it's pretty reasonably priced - about half of what he was threatening to pay at one stage(!)

Thanks again for the suggestions...
