I have recently heard that it maybe possible to recreate a pinhole camera using your digital camera (Superzoom/DSLR) and I was wondering if anyone else had heard of this too?

Apparently you take a blank lens cap, drill a hole in the centre and use tinfoil a round the edges of the hole.

in the past I have made and used my own pinhole cameras using b/w lith film to great effect, but if there is a way round it then I would like to try.

Gimp and Photoshop can also be used to create the effects after a normal colour photo has been taken. But it doesn't have the qualities of the original method (and digital properly wont as well lol)

hope someone can shed some light on this, might be time to do some experiments with my own camera as well ha ha

cheers

Chris

Someone I work with has mentioned it as well but me and him anit really looked into it that much TBH.

But I think I might give it a shot next weekend

I've got a body cap with a hole drilled through it setting in the botom of my camera bag somewhere... Drill a large-ish hole through one, then back it with black card or thick foil with the tinyest hole you can manage put through it. You'll get a focal length of about 50mm.

ISO 800 for about 10 minutes... It's a work in progress.

Hey Matt thats really cool, i wonder how it would look with more light??

the camera i have now only opens up for a max of 60s so im not at all hopeful of what i might get but i have ordered a lens cap from ebay so ill have a go and post some results if there any good

it works quite well... I haven't played with it properly, this is just a shout out the window from when I made it...

is just a hole drilled in a body cap, get a drinks can and cut out a small section, then get a small sewing needle and lightly tap the back of the needle with a hammer, making a very small hole. then tape the piece of can inside the body cap.

Of course, because it's along the lines of f256, it does shot up ALL the dirt on your sensor... (and yes, I have cleaned mine since this photo :P )

I've got a similar setup - canon body cap with a 8mm drill hole through the centre. In the back of the cap is a piece of self-adhesive aluminium tape, pierced with a hole made with the thinnest sewing needle in Mrs. Yin's sewing box. Took me 7-8 atempts to get the hole centered properly and not distorted in any way. Then it's just a matter of fitting it on the body instead of a lens, and setting the camera to Aperture priority, camera metering does the rest.

This was one I did for world pinhole day (24th april)...

really nice mate, im having trouble with my attempt at the moment, as i have a fixed lens then i have to put a cap over that i need to dig the tripod out as well. i tried making a small hole through tin foil but the results were rubbish! so i tried without tin foil 8mm hole and it was alittle better though its off centre a little

wow i really like this wish mine could go this way, i think its because im shooting through a fixed lens that im having so much trouble with mine

BOOM BOOM!

There is a website I found once that you can post your body cap to and they will precision laser a tiny hole in the dead centre of the body cap. I have been meaning to send my spare off! It is a little expensive, but atleast it will be very well made and far more precise and durable than using a drill and foil.

Ah, here is the website: Click Here

Sorry if a bit dumb but whats the point?

I always flick past the pinhole blending mode in ps....

I have looked at these with a bit of interest, thinking that for £25 I could get something a little bit fun. But to be honest, I've not really been that impressed with the pinhole pics I've seen posted. I keep looking though.

maybe, though bear in mind that using their laser kit, they can presumably set the precise size to give a better hole size for dslrs, whereas mine for example, was me bashing a needle with a hammer!

Glad someone else asked that, as I think I am too missing the point of this...

Same point as shooting with different focal length and aperture lenses or different cameras or in different light conditions or at different shutter speeds. It's just another way of taking photos.

Somthing else to play with and you could create some really spooky old looking pictures with it.

Because we can.

Sometimes it is nice to take a step back from the latest and greatest optics and get to the fundementals of making an image.

Regardless of how it turns out, it is something to do and it is photography.
