I`ve recently bought myself a canon 1000d dslr and the soft ware "digital photo professional" came with it but when i`ve been trying it out there doesn`t seem to be much you can change am i missing something here? I have been shooting in raw

Thanks tel i don`t know why i didn`t think of that,

You might find an update for it (DPP) on canons website aswell. I know for my 450D they recently introduced a better sharpening tab in it.

DPP is not a graphical editing package like Photoshop. Think of it more as an extension of the controls you have in your camera. If you shoot raw it allows you to alter many of the camera settings after you've taken the shot - e.g. to pick a different picture style, change white balance and adjust noise reduction and sharpening settings. It also throws in a few modest extras on top such as cropping, straightening, simple cloning and allows you to correct for lens distortions and aberrations. It's more about fine tuning the photographic capture rather than making wholesale "artistic" changes to the image.

Thanks for that,I recently was watching a programe on tv that showed a photographer touching up a picture by removing skin blemishes air brushing the models figure etc I'm assuming this is an expensive professional Photoshop

Full Photoshop CS5 would be the expensive way to do that. You could look at Photoshop Elements, which is much more reasonably priced.

I would go for Elements 8, and give it a try.CS5 is to complicated for beginners.
