Digital Medium Format Thread

Thank you @macvvery kind of you to say. I'm a little surprised at how well these images came out as I've not shot anything in months due to other commitments and suffering from mental fatigue - but the reaction to these images both here and my friends I've shared them with has been truly wonderful. Thank you

Lovely sense of scale and despite the busy background the ship still pops. Would a two or three shot stitch have been possible to include the full height?

Possibly, I was actually on an analogue camera photowalk, just sneaked the GFX+GF63mm in, so I only had one lens option, I actually quite like the truncated view as it puts a lot of emphasis on the bow of the boat. Wonder if it has enough pop for @snerkler ?!?!?

That's a good point about keeping focus on the bow, a full size probably would distract.

Not the sort of pop that I talk about :help: :LOL:

Stumbled across a beach volleyball match so put the GFX 50 to work. The autofocus has no chance so the only option was to fix the focus where the action was likely to come and hope for some luck.

Back to The Williamson Art Gallery (Birkenhead) for a second visit to the fantastic Apollo exhibition, I got the book at Christmas but seeing the images large is simply fantastic (exhibition runs to 2nd Sept - very recommended)

And one of my favourites:-

Boulder Field at Camelot taken by Gene Cernan (Hasselbald 70mm, 60mm F5.6 lens) - Schmitt is bounding back to the parked Lunar Rover, The 6000ft peak of East Massiff is above him, 11 miles away. Mission Control: "Hello 17 ...We'd like you to leave immediately, if not sooner!"

Both GFX50S +GF45mm

Thanks mate. I used to ride one of these. Always swore it had a hinge in the middle. Handling at speed was bloody awful. Good fun though. Happy days.
A mate of mine (about 20 yrs ago) had a rigid chop coffin tank and all based around that engine, it was a pig to start (kick only) and worse to ride but the engine was a good runner with plenty of power.

Just a query for the Fuji medium format shooter’s please;

Is there much different between GFX50R v GFX50S..?

Is one better than the other etc…?

Cheers;

Basically the same in technical terms, think X-E series for R and X-T for S - personally I think that the S is easier to hold, especially with some of the weightier lenses, and the S offers options like the tilt EVF, but in terms if IQ they are the same

gree with David @Mr Perceptive the analogy of X-E vs X-T series is a good one. Basically the IQ will be the same but the ergonomics, for me, on the S are far better for my landscape work than the R. I particularly love the tilt adapter for the EVF block and of course the screen on the back of the S tilts in 2 orientations unlike the R. It depends what you want to use it for I personally think the R is better for hand holding but the S is more versatile.

@macvisual - some s/h retailers do offer credit facilities on gear, Wilkinsons do on items over £500 - they have no bodies and only a couple of lenses available.

The 50SII plus 'kit' 35-70 is on £700 off promotion at the moment (total £3199)- and is available on Finance, from many major sellers, Clifton Cameras do have a 12 month interest free option and Wilkinsons have a 12 month Buy Now pay later option on this package (if you don't pay then it goes onto a 36 month finance deal). I have used interest free finance from both in past (Canon R6 for my step-daughter from Clifton and GF100-200 from Wilkinsons) and it worked seamlessly, though in both cases it was that I'd rather keep the money in my account than theirs, so just opted to spread payments, I didn't 'need' to :)

You have to be sure about the GFX, its a considered 'spend', the bodies are quite bulky (and slow, though nipper than your X-Pro/X-E1, think X-T1 like performance and you wont be far wrong) and there is a limited range of lenses (nothing particularly fast and nothing particularly long). If your photography fits the Digital MF criteria, then IMO there is nothing quite like it, and the images/files still amaze me 3 years in. I'm fortunate that I have all the lenses that I need at the moment, I even managed to turn down a GF23mm and GF110mm that a friend was selling (cheap) as they are lenses that I 'want' not 'need'!!! Less choice is better for my photography, my bank balance and my bag weight. In fact I would be happy with a GFX50S + GF45mm - a supersized X100.

Think about it carefully, try and borrow one from a dealer, perhaps Ffordes may help here, you do really need to know that its right for you before buying, and doubly so if you are going to use any form of finance.

^^ Excellent advice above.

A friend of mine's girlfriend was graduating the other day, I shot most of the celebrations on FF, but couldn't resist taking the X1D, as her hair colour was too good to miss:
