Digital Medium Format Thread

I've been enjoying getting out and about again with the GFX. Just ordered the EVF tilt adapter, that looks like a great idea.

Well my GFX ownership was short lived, i'm not going to knock Fujifilm as the customer service received from The House of Photography was superb and from LCE Strand.

The 50S II was unusable due to the EVF and screen containing horrendous levels of what looks like moire but about 10 times worse than anything i've ever encountered before. I did a firmware update and HOP did a factory reset for me but after returning it to LCE and trying another brand new one it was the same. No doubt we will see more reports of this in coming months, sadly I couldn't justify upgrading to a 100S. The displays were making me feel physically sick so it had to go back. I've researched this over the last few days and can't find a definitive answer to exactly what's going on, maybe refresh rate, maybe OLED induced, who knows.

Example below, the first shot is just an iPhone, the second what I was seeing on screen and through the EVF. Look at the roof with smaller tiles.

What a shame! GFX is my favorite system, the images are amazing. I have 50R and 100 and didn’t ever have issues like this.

No I think it’s specific to the 50S II. I’ve seen a discussion on flicker in the EVF on the 50S mk1 but that appears to be a different issue altogether. If they can sort it via a firmware update I’ll consider getting another one or possibly go for the 100S if funds permit later this year. They were expecting a 100S trade in tomorrow but it would have been out of budget.

Deeply impressed with the GFX today - handheld in (both) Liverpool Cathedrals - shown here is the original RAW and the processed image (GF30mm lens)

It's definitely my favourite camera to use. The R5 is incredible for events and sports of course. But I like the slower workflow the GFX forces you to use and the results are stunning.

Does anyone have experience with the GF 23 vs adapted Canon options like the 24 TSE, 11-24 or 16-35? The TSE covers the image circle but is manual, whereas the zooms don't cover it as far as I can see, certainly not at the widest angles.

You can't get action shots with a GFX 50S ii they said.........to be fair it isn't easy ;-)

Did you use the AF for this or preset manual focus and use continuous (is it 3fps?) to catch him entering the focal point? I used to use the latter a long time ago to photograph my dog charging towards me as the AF back then couldn't keep up! lol

Just AF-C zone with the stunning 3fps rate lol Aimed at the spot I knew he was going to come into and pulled the trigger a split second before he entered the frame. Took me about 20 minutes practice before realising it's so slow you have to release the shutter a split second before the subject enters the frame otherwise they have gone by the time it takes the shot.

Tim, no direct experience with 24mm TSE, its an option that I have investigated though and came to the conclusion that the 23mm is quite a bit sharper - this is based off internet discussions and various reviews. As you run both systems the sacrifice in ultimate IQ might be worth it to have the flexibility to use the lens on both Canon and Fuji systems. You do have to be careful as although the Image Circle may cover a lot of the GFX sensor, beyond FF may be more distorted as the Canon lens designers won't be concerned about performance outside of their working envelope (the TSE lenses should be an expection to this though)

My general research (and some experience) is that the GFX lenses are a level up on sharpness comapred with adapted FF lenses. I do use adapted lenses but generally these are more for artistic effect than IQ, the only exception being the EF100mm F2.8 L Macro which I'm using for scanning negatives, but in this case its more than up to the task as the negatives aren't capable of the resolution!

David, thank you. This fits with my experience. I have the 24 TSE so I'll test it out alongside the 32-64 in the next few days. Adapting lenses is giving results not otherwise achievable and for more creative images having 100% IQ isn't so important. For wide-angle images I'm selling at the moment, the canon setup is perfect. I'll get back with the test results.

Quick test:

The 24 TSE is pretty good, but not as good as with the native lens as expected.

I took that for the fuji toy filter thingy at first!

Who needs a GF 80mm ;)

Its a bit soft (or can't resolve the MP of the GFX) at F1.4 but it does cover the whole GFX sensor. First time I've used it in anger (and its all @trevorbray 's fault) Its got me looking at Sigma 85mm F1.4 ARTs now (as they will work on my Andoer adapter), and then their are the Zeiss Planar 85mm F1.4s - stupid, expensive, hobby this............................. :ROFLMAO:

GFX sort of works for wildlife too. Grey and foggy today.

It would be interesting to see if the Dehaze slider in Lightroom could deal with fog?
