I need to buy some software to process my photos. Which is the best to get (or easiest to use)? They all seem quite complicated to use so I guess I have a big learning curve coming up.

There's quite a learning curve whichever package you buy. A lot of people will go for Photoshop simply because it's known to be the best, which it probably is. It's also quite heavy on system resources and can be slow even on a fast machine. There are probably more help and instruction articles written for Photoshop than anything else, which is in it's favour. The average photo user will never use 10% of it's actual capability though. If you really want to go the Photoshop route get Elements which is much cheaper and it will be an easier transition to the full deal if you want to upgrade later on.

One store say they have photoshop 3 and 5 at £60 each or two for £80. Are any of these what I need?

Why would you want 3 and 5 ? As was said earlier, PS Elements 5.0 should be more than enough for the serious or beginner amateur 'tog.

The full blown photoshop is on version 10 now (CS3), so that's probably Photoshop Elements, in which case you only need one of them, 5 being the newest.

The £60 one is Photoshop Elements 5, and the £80 one is for Photoshop Elements 5 and Premiere Elements 1??. Premiere is a software package for editing video, not still images, so unless you also need this I'd stick to the standard Elements pack.

I'd imagine the version 3 is the Mac version IIRC.

Get yourself a subscription to Digital Photo magazine. Every month they have a cover CD containing a couple of hours worth of excellent video tutorials. They're very biased towards Photoshop / Elements / Paint Shop Pro which are the market leaders, but it you decided to go for a different package the principles are pretty much the same imo.

Downloaded Photoshop Elements on a 30 day trial. Looks good so far.

Shogun - I have an old version of elements (2, I think, never used it) that came free with my 300d - if you want it, just let me know an address - I am also going through the learning curve, and have just bought elements 5, but as Johnb said, picassa might also be worth a play..
Good lcuk !

:D Downloaded Gimp but couldn't even get a photo in to work on.:D
