Happy Easter!

Can anyone recommend a book for a complete beginner to learn about digital manipulation concepts? I'd prefer if it wasn't tied to a particular software, but appreciate this may be difficult.

TIA

Are you looking for a how to do something type of book - if so these will all be linked to the software or is it more the teccie type of how does image manipulation work ?

Have a look at the "For Dummies" range although most of them are software specific....

Hi Andrew - More the latter. Once I decide on the software im going to use then i'll home in on a 'how to' book (will almost definitely be Adobe PSE7 or CS4).

I'm afraid I can't help with that - I've never really got into the behind the scenes mathematics & programming that goes on. I'm sure that there's someone here who can help though. Good luck with your search

Oh i'm not quite THAT technical ;) What I really was after was something that would tell you WHY you would manipulate an image in such a way, rather than just HOW to do it. An example might be, how to tell an image would benefit from sharpening and why. Another might be how adjusting saturation and vibrance effect an image, and how one would tell when and how much to adjust these settings on a image.

Maybe i'm after something that doesn't exist, or I should just get on with it and learn through using a specific piece of software and trial and error with my images...
