The latest issue of Which reports digital camera relaibility at 96% on average. Canon and Nikon are in the bottom three for reliability. Top make for reliability and customer satisfaction is Panasonic.

Is Which out of step with the experience of this forum?

maybe panasonic have a broader range of compacts, which are stronger than a consumer grade DSLR

Panasonic has something like 8 compacts in the best buy list.

And less people have them than Canon and Nikon which together has like 80% share of the market. Less Panosonic on the market, less of them breaks.

There were as many Panasonic respondents as Nikon. The point about them not having any DLSRs is correct. The overall best buy is a FZ-18. I do have one but don't prefer it to my 400D.

I'm pretty sure an intelligent enough survey would take all these into consideration though. Right?

You'd think so.... not always the case...

Take the JD power survey for cars... It does not take into account the amount of mileage every respondant does - so I respond and say my Audi has been in the dealership 4 times this year. That goes down as a bad thing - fact is the car has done 60,000 miles and that is actually not that bad...

Nor does it take into account the type of driver/mileage.

It's a guide, that's all...

I've had 3 Canon dSLR's - 350D, 30D & 40D - none of them have given me any trouble.
The only thing thats gone wrong since getting my 350D (they had just hit the shops as I'd been planning to get a 300D but waited for the 350D) was my Sigma 1.4TC failed.

Never had an issues with any Canon body (now on my fourth), lens , compact or anything else to be fair.

Canon users expectations are probably higher than those of a Panasonic compact (and also looking for the camera to do a lot more than zoom in and out ). Ditto the JDPower survey for cars - Skoda do well because a lot of their clientel just want a small compact car that starts and goes, not something thats got great handling and will do 60k miles pa.

"Lies, damned lies, and statistics" is part of a phrase attributed to Benjamin Disraeli and popularized in the United States by Mark Twain: "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics." The semi-ironic statement refers to the persuasive power of numbers, and succinctly describes how even accurate statistics can be used to bolster inaccurate arguments.

never had a problem with any camera i owned, ever. oh dear i have just jinxed myself:(

Bought my 350D and 20D new, had no hassles whatsoever with either and must have done about 100 000 actuations between them...had err 99 once with the 20D and this was my own fault, impatience, resolved quickly and never had it again.

Got me a very nice 2nd hand 5D and then a 1Ds II and still have had no hassles WHATSOEVER...

Reliable?

I think so.

Another issue with these surveys is that people have a tendency to only take part when the have a problem or a gripe.

96.3% of all statistics are made up:naughty:
