Hi all, I have currently got a 530 and a 430 canon flash setup . has anyone got any advice on which diffuser is good for portraits and also sports ie lighting the subject mid action so it is not too harsh giving great tones etc.

Its a very leading request but if anyone can point me in the right direction and maybe show a few examples that would be fantastic.

Take a look at the Lumiquest range, certainly for portraiture etc.
As for sports, you're usually too far away for a modifier to make any difference. The light source will still be effectively small and therefore "hard". What sort of sports, and what kind of distance?
 
action sports and mma (mixed martial arts) the action sports the athlete can be lost in the shot if for example in a poorly lit skate park so to try and get a little light on them is better than none if that makes sense?
 
Skateboarding, you may as well go bare head. Too far to make a difference, and you'll likely need to make use of the speedlight's zoom function too.

As for martial arts, parabolic reflective umbrellas can work well if you have sufficient room around the mat to use, and not interfere with judging or spectators, either one of which can quite quickly end your shoot for you.
At martial arts competitions, I've gone basically bare head or stofene'd, depending on the setting.
If your ceiling is white and low enough, zoom the head to long end (? 105mm) and bounce off the ceiling with one or two guns. Another set up bare head and to cross light will pick up the texture and provide the 3D lift you're looking for.

My set up is very dependant on what I'm doing. From 0ne speedlight up to seven.
Or the Lencarta Safari Classic, or a mix of speedlights and the Safari.

Dependant on subject, background, setting, target client, ambience and where I want to go with it.
