Hi, I am interested in the Canon 600D with the 18-55mm kit lens and I'm tempted to order it this weekend because there is a promotion going on where you get a free Canon EF 50mm lens. Firstly, what is the Canon EF 50mm lens generally used for?

And I've looked at 2 websites which are selling this product: John Lewis and Wex Photography. The main difference is that Wex Photography offer the 18-55mm IS II Lens rather than the 18-55mm IS Lens- what is the difference between the two? I'd rather buy it from John Lewis (if it comes back into stock!) as I've never heard of Wex photography before (are they are reputable company?).

Also, with Wex photography, they are also offering the Canon EF 50mm f1.8 II Lens instead of the Canon EF 50mm f1.8 Lens which are offered by John Lewis.

Are Wex photography offering a noticeably better lens with the camera?

Thanks for your help!

I seemed to recall there was no difference and a few searches backed it up - here

Am I right in saying that the II is the 'newer' lens? Apparently it has image stabilisation properties? (I may be wrong though though!)

The difference was only cosmetic, and according to some, possibly a new algorithm for the IS (though in testing, IS on both was of the same effectiveness).

The Mark 1 50mm hasn't been manufactured for many years, I would be surprised if John Lewis were selling a long discontinued lens (more likely just an omission of the correct details).

Er this is the product which I am referring to: http://www.johnlewis.com/canon-eos-...hd-1080p-18mp-3-lcd-screen/p231212775#default

Do they look like Mark II lens? :p

The difference is in the stabiliser. It works better apparently when you are panning

Have a look at Hdew Cameras, they do the 600D and 18-55 IS II for £399. I know that doesn't include the 50mm but you should be able to pick one up fairly cheaply somewhere like MPB or similar. Here's the link to Hdew http://www.hdewcameras.co.uk/canon-eos-600d-body-with-18-55-is-ii-lens-kit-835-p.asp I've bought 2 bodies and 1 lens from them and they give great service.

It's a good price from a retailer with a good name, just as long as the buyer is aware of the fact they would be buying a grey import without a warranty from Canon UK.
