Difference between 18-55 non IS and 18-55 IS canon

Is there much difference between the older version and newer version of Canons kit lens?
Does the IS make a big difference and is there any improvement on optics?

Someone on here said that there is an improvement in quality in the IS on...:thinking: Personally, I've had both, now have just the non IS, and can't see any improvement. They are well known for having a relatively poor quality, in contrast to the excellent Nikon kit lens. :)
 
The IS helps a bit - but there is definitly an improvement in the optics. It's not a staggering improvement but peformance wide open is much better, evening out as you stop down.
 
Ok I may just go for the non IS and save money. :)
Yes Nikon lenses are very good, we have Nikon in school.

Oh didn't see your post first look, hmm well that does change things. I'll see if i can have a go with both.
