Don't know if anyone is interested but 3 of the old cooling towers are being demolished in a controlled explosions on the 27th July early morning should make for a good image

Thanks. Not sure where the best valtage point will be yet as it's pretty flat all round there. You can see the towers from the top of the M40 cutting but that's a bit too far for good pix.

Little Wittenham, Oxon, OX14 4QZ
Wittenham clumps - on the top of the clumps it looks straight onto the power station and I'm guessing as the bird flys its about 1.5 miles or you could try the Dorchester road that links Abingdon to burcot thats on level ground but you can see the station very clear again about 1.5 miles as the bird flys or failing that park at my place cross the road to the farmers fields and the power station is infront of you about 1.5 miles

Hope this helps

There's a grass area at Milton Road that's pretty close, not sure if that'll be blocked off, or the unfinished road by the golf club for a view over the houses?

i used to work in a building right next to those and always said it would of been cool to be there when they came down. I had no idea they were planning to scrap them. Shame i'm too far away now.

I spent many years with them as a part of the horizon, and sadly am too far away to go along to watch but a friend will be getting up early to watch the event, so many thanks for the heads up step72 !

No problem

There is a great view of the station from the bridge over the railway on the Abingdon road between Clifton hampden and Culham but unfortunately the southern towers will be partly obscured by the generating hall, The Clumps afford a good view if a little far away and the Ridgeway on the southern side is just too far away and it looks as though they will try to close off as many roads as possible to stop people getting close.

For information this is the view from Sinodun hills, about half a mile further along the ridge than the clumps so is is a good indication of what you will see from there.

Can you let us know what focal length lens you used for this image? - No EXIF data as far as I can see.

Many thanks

Very interested in watching this - how many of you are thinking of going?

That would have been useful wouldn't it. It was taken with my 24-70 @ 42 so not a high magnification at all. The Southern towers which will be the ones to go are those on the left.

I should be there I'm just not the best with early mornings so I wouldn't be surprised if I over slept and missed it, although there is a campaign/petition to alter the time slightly so more people get the chance to to see them coming down

Fair few up on Wittenham clumps already, plenty of togs and a few parties.

Cool, I've just come back from having a meal out and there's people in all sorts of places lol
Ill be back out just before 2.00
I'm going to be on the Milton road between Milton village and Sutton Courtney village

Yeah I guessed that's where you took that photo from, my brother lives in SC. The clumps actually afford a better view than in the snap I posted above. Now can I get up at 2 to get back up there?

Haha I've the same worries I'm just as likely to over sleep

Rumours have it that it's going to happen at 3.45 with them sounding a claxon 30 seconds before then a 10 second count down

These are just rumours thou

What sort of settings you looking at
I'm thinking very high iso wide open aperture and keep doing test shots and adjust the shutter accordingly ?

I don't really have the equipment for photo's at that time. A 24-70 on a 7D with a high ISO intolerance and an Xpro 1 are not the best combo's. I was just going up for the crack and to catch the dawn on the walk home.

Cool, stay safe

It was 5am, I've seen some amazing video footage on FB
I was really surprised how quick the lighting was changing I was constantly checking and changing my camera settings
I didn't get any amazing images but ill post up later after I've had a sleep

I remember seeing a program about gliding on TV some time ago.
As part of one of the cross country tests, the glider pilot took off from Sutton Bank in Yorkshire, flew down to Didcot and then had to fly back to Sutton Bank.
To prove they made the trip they were required to photograph the cooling towers as they flew over.
What are they going to do now the towers are gone?

Was talking to some army chaps last night. They were saying the Merlin Helicopter pilots from Raf Benson would be buggered now!

This is a news clip of the towers coming down the reporter also says the other 3 will be coming down next year and the whole site has to be cleared by 2016 and there will be new homes and businesses built on the land
