Did anyone else see the orange lights?!!

Most civilian helicopters (and yes that includes police helicopters because they only use civil models) have a top speed far less than 200mph, usually between 150 and 175mph, the world air speed record for Helicopters is 249.1mph,

I saw similar orange lights last year, in June, 2 of these flew north to south over Spalding in Lincs, i put them down as Military Aircraft at very high altitude being illuminated by the sun, hence the orange light, very much like the moon is !

We had about 30 go over in a 2 hour period, the first half dozen came from north east direction, then about midnight they came in from over the east to west, reading your comments the wind could have changed in that time, but it was the first time I have ever seen anything like this, took about 3 photo`s, not very good, had no idea what they were,

but they added to the new year with the fire works, as I was sat out in the hot tub with a bottle of champagne watching them, cheers:beer:
 
Two of these Chinese Lanterns landed on our road late on Xmas Eve. I'd just come back from a meal and the missus pointed them out still glowing slightly as they were drifting down from several hunded feet. Didn't know at that time what they where so when it landed 100 yards away, went to have a look.

Was a big crepe paper bag with a metal frame at the bottom, the heat source had fully burnt out and there was a personal message on the balloon.

'*****, please come home, your family love you and are missing you this Christmas' :'(

I presumed this was a way for the family to release some anguish at this time of the year. The other lantern had a similar message.

I presume the new year lanterns are wishing for people to be found/to come home etc during 2010. I also presume that the further the lanterns go, there is a possibility that someone may know the person concerned.
 
Chinese lanterns aren't always that deep and meaningful adamski. I drew a shark's head on mine and asked for the winning lottery numbers.
 
Cmon chaps, the reason there are more "sightings" at this time of the year is because this is the time of the year that tons of folk release chinese lanterns. The lanterns glow surprisingly bright so can be seen for miles as an orange glow. The thermals differ as you climb so the lanterns can quite easily change direction suddenly, or be seemingly moving against the wind. The glow of the lanterns on some stutter as the wind gets in, and on others it's a constant glow as they are more sheltered.
There is no strange mystery to it. You saw chinese lanterns, nothing more.

hey Mal ,if i lightened up any more , i'd float up into the sky ,then they'd all be asking if anyone else saw the unidentified blimp in the sky last night :lol:
 
those bloody lanterns are dangerous.. think about it a potential fireball flying through the sky.. plus theyve got wire in them which isnt good for wildlife.

bit OT i know but hey.

p.s. - if you put "chinese lantern" in to google you get a load of hits saying stuff like...

which are often mistaken for UFOs

Wind direction is not a constant, the direction of the wind is normally very different once you get away from the ground.

I think it changes something like 6-10 degrees of direction for every thousand feet, I cant remember the exact figure.. been 3-4 years since I studied meteorology for aviation, so its entirely plausible than a free floating object in the air will float in a different direction to the surface wind direction. I've attached a video below that I hope shows this better.

The reason they probably appeared to be going faster than an aircraft, is the same reason that when you drive down a motorway the trees on the side of the road look like they are 'going past' faster than the ones on the horizon.

In all likeliness what you saw was probably Chinese Lanterns..
 
I dont want to burst any bubbles but is Area 51 a myth also or was that painted into google.............I am not saying every orange glow is a sighting but cmon some are unexplainable
 
What part of Area 51 are you querying?

Area 51/Groom Lake exists in 'real life'. Its an airfield which has 737's fly there most days from KLAS/Las Vegas under the callsign "Janet". Presumably they fly in the workers each day.

it's alien craft which has been cleverly disguised as chinese lanterns. That way they can move about our skies freely.

Point 1, these objects were seen flying.
Point 2, they have not been POSITIVELY identified (although the probability is that they were Chinese lanterns).
Therefore, they were unidentified (see point 2) flying objects (see point 1).

Not surprising that there are lots around shortly after midnight as the year changes - plenty of dulled senses around as well as loads of those bloody lantern things.
 
Well I was listening to Alan Robson last night (for those who div not nar, he's a local radio presenter) and he was saying that aload of people who he works with, set off chinese lanterns earlier that day, saying if they were flying casually, that's what they were. These were anything but casual and I admit some of them may have been chinese lanterns, but given the speed and how they differered in directions and the dotty ones that wouldn't capture digitally, I recon some were chinese lanterns but possibly not all of them. Yep, some of you may think I'm stark raving, but meh, about time you all knew it anyway :p

Mynx, you believe whatever makes you happy, but I was watching the same sky as you and I saw plenty of what I guarantee were chinese lanterns. I saw no flying saucers or experimental government aircraft I assure you...

Maybe only believers can see them? :D
