Yes
Took these a little after midnight. They were orange lights flying in the sky, loads of them, sort of in formation, every few seconds, going incredibly fast - faster than a plane or anything manmade, all going the same way (oposate to the wind). It was really weird, some of them were like a dot sourrounded by a circle of dots, sorrounded by a circle of dots etc, but bizarrely, they disappeared after taking them, leaving me with just a black image... the others were like nonagons, with ripples inside! Very bizarre!! Some of the images I took of just one light but when I looked at them on PC there were 2 lights! Doesn't make alot of sense to me like... (they weren't chinese lanterns, no way, not at the speed that they were travelling or the circles of dots...and the disappearing images couldn't be explained, - all of the images were taken with the same settings!

This one I cropped and increased the size, so that you can see the ripples.
Don't have a lens bigger than 300.

chinese lanterns, set a few off myself last night :)

edit:ok i see you ruled that out, but i can assure you they were. the wind up above is often as different direction than down below, we set one off earlier for the kids there was no wind low down but once it was up there is was shifting fast. the ones we set off at midnight were accompanied by more from other people, looks like there was a lot set off last night.

the pictures just show the shape of your aperture as you werent zoomed in and focused.

That's exactly what we saw on around Jan 5th last year. It was written off as chinese lanterns, but they way these things were moving was not in keeping with the weather (beautiful, clear night and no wind!) , and I've never been convinced! I'm not a foil hat wearer, but me, my OH and our neighbour were stood watching them dancing for ages..

But they were going incredibly fast and in the oposate direction to the wind...surely chinese lanterns would go with the wind and nowhere near as fast as a plane, never mind faster?

Not just that but they were as high as the planes or higher - if they were chinese lanterns they'd have to be the size of football pitches to be seen how we could see them

we saw 7 in formation last year just hovering then thet just took off at a very fast rate, this was also in the news for days after and the chinese lantern theory was discounted due to too many people seeing them and the speed they went

they were so high and fast when we saw them, you're right, they would have needed to be HUGE!

thing is from the ground you cant tell how big/ high / fast they actually are! wind is a complicated thing and direction can change with location and altitude.

your all describing what i saw, what i saw were lanterns some of them mine, and many from others.

i saw two of them last night at around 12.20.
At first i thought they were plane lights - but there aren't orange ones, so don't know what to think.

there are thousands of lifeforms on our planet, surely ther must be at least one more in the vast cosmos we call space and they do visit anyone who thinks we are the only ones out there must be deluded, I believe there are many more planets that have intelligent life.
Also there was an article I read in one paper a few months ago about President Obama doing a press conference in the near future about the area that doesnt exist Area 51 and the existance of extra terrestrial lifeforms, could be a very interesting year

I agree - and a little off topic....but Area51 is on google Earth ;)

we saw quite a few over where we live just after midnight. A bit excited at first until my wife pointed out that they were Chinses Lanterns!

I must admit though, they didn't half shift through the sky!

Black helicopters or Predator drones....

Where did I put my tinfoil hat?

These are always Chinese lanterns, to say they were flying in formation is just what you think you saw and want to believe, as for moving against the wind there is an explanation that, our resident weather expert could explain.

Chinese lanterns..........end of!!

:D

so 5 of us all just *think* we saw the same thing, cause we want to believe it? err, rightio...

I'm not one to quickly and readily dismiss UFO theories and claims, but I saw quite a few of these last night and they are Chinese lanterns, without a doubt. Regardless of what speed you may think they were flying at. Did you not see the one in the news a year or two ago? The one that the police helicopter chased, was overtaken by, and they couldn't keep up with? The short clip of video taken of it as it flashed by them and in to the distance clearly showed a lantern. Now, what's the top speed of a typical police helicopter - 200 knots/mph - or more?

And the wind speed and direction on the ground is not the same as at 1000ft and higher.

Obviously hundreds of sane people are seeing things ........... at the same time, we are mad then

LOL... no one is disputing that there was something - more that an explanation has been given, but some people are looking for something "more".

I'm a firm believer that there is life out there, but do you really think that other intelligent life forms would turn up to another planet in what can only be described as paper lampshades with a tea light inside?

In my opinion, the other life forms have been here already, didn't like what they saw and moved on to find somewhere nicer. Either that or they're waiting for us to wipe ourselves out before they move in.

They have been as videos and photos have proved, I am not and will never say a chinese lantern is a UFO but some do need more explaining especially the ones travelling faster than any man made object.............into the wind:shrug:

If alien life forms have the technology to travel interstellar distances, then surely they have the technology to fit flashing red and green lights to their spacecraft in accordance with FAA rules? Or to disguise their spaceships as Chinese lanterns?

But, as has been said, wind directions vary at different altitudes - and yes, the directions can be 180 degrees from each other.

The thing with these types of sightings is that there is absolutely no way for the human eye to be able to accurately estimate the height they are at - without that piece of information, it's then impossible to judge speed.

Not disputing you for a minute MM
Its strange that a lot of UFO sighting are in the early part of the new year
I wonder why that is
( this is not supposed top be sarcastic I have seen "unexplained lights" in the sky too )

Chinese lanterns.:D:exit:
