I've been doing some work on writing a speech synthesis facility for a smartphone project and realised I could adapt it to make a simple speaking darkroom/development timer for my film photography hobby, so that I wouldn't have to stare at the kitchen clock for 10 minutes or so.

I've written a simple app which counts towards development time, announces the elapsed time at intervals and says 'agitation soon' just before agitation is due. It also warns just before the development time is up. The warning times and agitation intervals are selected from a fairly limited set of values.

The speech texts are all stored in the app as .wav files so it requires no internet or phone connection at all and won't use up your data allowance or cost anything in call charges.

It's not got pretty graphics or anything but it's functional (a bit like my FED 2). If anyone's interested in it (it's free by the way and doesn't require any special permissions to run), I'll post a link in the next couple of days to where it can be downloaded from. It should run on any phone with Android 2.1 or higher.

Sounds good, if only there was an iOS version. I use the massive dev chart app as my development timer but it does cost £6. The large databanks of film types and developers is nice but not something i use much any more :)

If I had a phone I'd definitely use it! The 'agitation soon' thing would be very helpful, I'm constantly forgetting. Are the announcements customisable though? Say for people agitating at odd intervals - for the 1st minute, once the 2nd, fourth, eighth, sixteenth, etc.

Are the announcements customisable though?

Only to a limited extent at the moment, i.e. 30 seconds and 1 minute and you can have it warn you 5 seconds or 10 seconds before agitation's due. I only ever do Tri-X and FP4 in D76/ID-11 at 1:1, so that's all I need. I just made the app so that it would fit on a phone with a small screen. I could expand it a bit but then there would be no end to it.

I'll give it a shot..:)

Android, like Nikon......is the only way to go..

:D

That was easy, typed the address in to address bar on the phone and bingo.

Looks like win96 but works fine, I kinda wonder why you don't have the same choice over agitation intervals and the point at which it reminds you to "agitate soon", that you do with development times, its the same window 3 times, not to do it down or anything, I dunno nothin about creating apps..:D
That aside, its very functional, I'm going to say something that everyone will be very familiar with when using their phone to time developments and that is.........the bladdy screen doesn't time out to blank and thus you don't have to smear it with wet kin fingers..
Not having to look at it is handy too

I think I want a speech 10 second count down to agitation..:D

Well done! This is a useful and splendidly generous thing. I was slightly spooked by the voice, though - just the same as the sat-nav!
