Hello

I'm looking to create my own website. It'll be a fairly simple website to start with, building on it as I go. But I would like to have 2 functions from start, one is to have the images auto changing on the front page, like this website barry wells

Also I would like the image to pop up once clicked on, like what happens on this website mark hamblim.

The only problem is that I have no idea what software to use. So can any one help me and let me know what software is required and if possible, where to get it from.

Thanks in advance

The second link is using Lightbox, you just need to add some code to your page.

The first one is using a Flash gallery, there are quite a few available, it is just a case of choosing one you like the look of.

Hi,

As a coincidence CLIKPIC provide both of the functions you need (I use them both on mine), it's well worth considering if you want an easily put together site.

I can't help you with alternative software suggestions as I'm lazy when it comes to site building !!

Thanks for the information Crikeybaby, I'll look into them later today.

Hi Simon

I've looked at clickpic, but fidn them a little expensive, and they don't seem that scaleable, which is what I am really interested in. Thanks for your suggestion and I'll keep them in mind anyway.

Sounds like you need to employ a designer. While you can do the DIY thing, and plenty here do, it is the equivalent of "uncle bob" at the wedding

We do lots of sites like you describe. Whilst a designer will make the job look easy, for a novice to do this from scratch and learn everything from scratch is not a small task

Its a bit like any of us deciding to replace the valves in a BMW. We all could probably manage it, screw it up, read the manual, where as a mechanic will have it done before lunchtime

In terms of software, you will need Notepad, Photoshop and possibly Dreamweaver. However, its the wetware you need to get sorted

Actually, going on the original post, it's not that difficult. In fact I'd encourage the OP to try this for themselves first before spending over the odds on a web designer.

The image popup is done through a jQuery plugin called lightBox.

You can find jQuery here and lightBox here.

Both are free to use.

The lightBox website has examples and also tutorials on how to implement this on your own website... in very simple terms. jQuery website also has a tutorials section.

In fact, you can use jQuery to do the slideshow on the home page too. You can find some examples of jQuery slideshows here.

Once you get your head around the basic HTML and CSS, you'll be glad you gave it a shot.

I've helped people on this site before for free and would gladly offer you tips and pointers as you go through.

You should also buy yourself a decent HTML book to get to grips with the basics.

Oh, and as Richard said, you will need some editors. Eclipse is free and becomes even more powerful with the Aptana plugin, which is also free.

Aptana has a whole suite of editing tools, most importantly for you a HTML and CSS editor. It'll also help with your coding as it offers auto-complete... a predictive text style feature like on mobile phones to speed things up for you.

So. The tools are free. The only thing you need to do is invest some time :)

1st of all thank you for all your replies. Sorry about my sl.ow reply to your posts, just spend the last to days chasing animals round the highlansd, with some success.

I will be looking to built this site myself, and have done some basic html stuff in the past, but will be looking to design it with CSS this time, including either php or some basic javascript and as there seems to be application I can plug in for the feures I use, some basic java. Richard King, I understand your concerns and I agree with your statment of the time its going to take, but money is a major issue, with time not being so with the long nights coming in.

artHarris, thanks for the link, website hosting is something I need to spend more time investigating.

Thanks all once again.
JayKay thanks for your links, I look into the development software, being free would be great. I've been looking at dreamweaver, put the cost is very prohibative at the moment.

Thanks for the links to Lightbox, which i'd heard of before, but not jquery. I am planning a lazy day for tomorrow, so I'll spend some time investigating them.

Jaykay, thanks for the link to eclipse, spent the last week using it with great success.

I'm interesting in using the lightbox option on my website, but sturgling to find and example. More than likely poor searching by me, but does anyone on here use lightbox. If so can I have a peak at your website :)

Hey mate, I've actually removed lightbox from my site because I now use the background as my slideshow.

However, take a look here for official examples on how to implement Lightbox 2. Just look at their source code to see how it's done... instructions and code samples are also available on that page.

Let me know if you need a hand.

KJ.

I use FolioSnap for my site. Works really well, dead easy to use and top-notch support.

Thanks both. I'll keep the lightbox in mind for the future, but I've gone with the simplerviewer for the time being, mainly as I understand it. I'm going to take the website on in thefuture and will use on of the above option.

Thanks again :thumbs: KayJay and Phoenix for your above help. The website is almost finished now, just have some tiding up to do and an issue with firefox not rendering the gallery correctly, so hopefully I'll publish it shortly for you all to have a look at.
