Desperately Needing New Tripod...

If I were you I'd grit my teeth, go without a tripod and crank up the ISO for the Ice Hockey tomorrow, and save your cash to put towards something decent that will actually last you, rather than something which you will extremely quickly find the limitations of and will then have next to no resale value.

join the club adele, looking for the same myself, my own is ancient of i am convinced is made of some bendy metal like substance.. most of my images are leaning to one side slightly despite all my efforts to get them level..
i am giving serious consideration to a slik tripod.. but given my own research i think i'd advise you stop and think about what you need from a tripod - if ts purley for the ice hockey, does it need to be tall enough to see over the barrier? if its for landscapes (as mine will be) is it sturdy yet light enough to carry everywhere?
i have seen the second je$$ops one you listed, its review centre reviews arent brilliant, but it did look OK when i saw it and seems reasonably sturdy.
let us know what you decide on - sorry for being little no help :D

Adele, I would echo what Witch has said, shoot hand held up the iso, or take a been bag and rest it on the edge of the sin bin, I presume thats where your sitting.

Those tripods you linked to are shall we say not upto the job, save a bit of money and buy the best tripod you can afford, it will save you upgrading later, (which will cost more in the long run) look at the Manfrotto range, good trpods that work and last, or if you have loads of money Gitzo range, superb trpods as they say "the last tripod you will ever buy". A tripod is a serious part of the kit.

On another side, would a monopod be more suited to that type of photography ?.

Having recently upgraded from a 'bendy' to a really good tripod and head combo, I can highly recommend saving money now and getting a good one when you can. Having said that, I still use my cheapo one as a walk about 'pod as its so much lighter than the manfrotto.

But, as mho has said, I would question if what you really need at the moment, for ice hockey, is a monopod, not a tripod. Earlier in the year I watched a 'pro' doing the shots at my daughters Ice skating comp with a tripod, and he looked uncomfortable at best, trying to keep up with the range of movement. Now I can see his reasoning, 5 hours stood in same spot is a long time, so could understand using a tripod, but for the length of a hockey game, I think I would prefer a monopod.....

...sorry, I am rambling now aren't I :gag:  I will shut up.

Im not just wanting it for Icehockey...Im wanting it for other stuff too. Landscapes etc....but I need one and I need one now.

I cannot wait until I have "saved" up enuff money, because, its almost christmas, and I cannot wait until after christmas to purchase a tripod either.

I am not sat in the "sin bin" I am sat on the players bench, I stand behind the gate where the prof. 'tog stands [at normal matches - this is ametaur -like me] so I have shot before with a tripod [until i realised that it was bent]

So....you're all saying that I should just wait...

I cant shoot the hockey without a tripod. I am not even RISKING using a beanbag support on the side as they tend to crash into barries and things [I have no perspex near me]

so...noone has any other advice?

Anyone on here who lives nerby & can who can lend you a tri/monopod for the evening?! Better than wasting £££ on a hurried buy.

I'd offer but a)I live on the south coast & b) I lent my tripod to a mate two years ago and still haven't got it back.:bat:

The velbon you list Adele is identical to mine, except mine is labelled proline [which in turn is identical to my mates, that is labelled hama] - should be ok as long as not putting to heavy a camera on it or too long a lens. ;)

Cheers LL :) Our Love of Richard hammond means I listen to your advice.

I think me and my camera are of out for the afternoon....to visit Mr Jessops [and the fit irish man who works there]

Why can you not shoot handheld Adele? You'll just wind up upgrading to a decent tripod when you find those ones aren't good enough (unless you are minted & then I'd say go for it :p)
The light reflecting off the ice should allow you some latitude with exposure compensation & give you a reasonable shutter speed - just shoot with the lens wide open, set your minimum shutter speed that you'll need & then up the ISO to reach the exposure that you'll need.

I tried that too, the lighting in ice rinks is bloody weird - you would have thought having that huge reflector on the floor would make it easier.... but no! Mind you, I did do hand held anyway, as I didnt take any kind of support, and tbh, mine were no worse than the pro with a tripod. ;)

Like I said earlier, if I had to chose something just for this, it would be a monopod, but if she wants something that wil serve for 6 mths in other circumstances then a cheapo tripod, [that will also serve as a half sensible carry about device even after purchasing a good one] is not so daft really.... not if it gets you a close encounter with a nice man with a cute accent :whistling:

Fit Irish man you say.... **wonders how quick I can get yorkshire to act as offical personal shopper**
Good luck, have a good play with it first, and if you are there anyway, look at monopods too. ;)

Yeah I'll have a look at the mono-pods too...and yes...fit irish man. He sold me my camera....and omg...he could have sold me anything [some people will argue he did] he was the Nikon trained bloke in the shop...but no...i went with my pentax....he told me to go with what felt right....
LL, its a shame you cant meet us for the sheffield meet. He works in the jessops in meadohwall...:D

The reason I cannot shoot handheld is that on the tripod I had it whacked upto iso 1600 because I am not using the right lens [I had people tell me on here i wouldnt get a half decent photo because i wasnt using a fast enough lens last time] I generally have the apature wide open at f4.0 [i think depending what lens i use] generaly end up using the 70-300mm sigma lens. as I only have that and my kit lens.... :( im lost.
I dont have mega money, and I will not be able to shoot unaided tonight. unless I just tke my PS

dellipher have a look at the velbon luxi f, very light and pretty strong, i brought a £30 hama tripod and within a week had brought this velbon, so much better and stronger and it feels actually like it won't fall over if a fly snezzes unlike some other tripods.

ISO1600 and F4? Do they play in the dark?

Hang on, I am off to check which lens I used, as I am sure it was my sigma 70-300 too.....

Oh, and would Love to get to a sheffield meet, but Mr LL is already moaning I love my cameras more then him

this is after I have been to the gym and perv'd on my instructor....

ANYWAY....I need one for "other" stuff....so I'll go and have a play...and buy a cheap one....then Ill just have to get money out of my parents to get me a decent one.
Either that, or hope we get a good bonus from work again! :D

Someone told me to hit my iso upto 1600 cos then I would get a super fast shutter speed....[im still all learning] but im sure that I had it....at f4 or it could have been f5 possibly, do you wanna see some unprocessed pics that came out...lol

ok... get the tripod if you really want it, but try a bit of hand held aswell. At ISO 1200+ you should, with the sigma, at between F4 and 5.6, manage to get a few at around 1/250, or even, at a push 1/320.... you might not get the fastest moments of the game, but you should manage something half decent I think. Got to be worth trying. Pan with the players and try and keep the focus on them rather then any background. Good luck!

You know what...I think i may just try hand-held...what do I have to lose?

here is one I took at the last hockey training I went to....

I know some other bits of tweaking and stuff and cloning etc...but it werent TOO bad...

Whats wrong with that? Yes it has some motion blur, but that suits the subject anyway imo, I am not sure I would want them totally frozen...maybe the odd one or two, but on a personal level, i want to feel some of the action. Get outta here, hand hold and have fun!! For a kit lens or the sigma, that aint so bad at all! Wish I was coming with you now, it will probably be fun! :D

:D I go quite often actually....my friend is an amatuer hockey player, but the "better" players go tonight.
And most of my photos are on peoples facebooks as their main pics.

I went to the Steelers Match with the guy I know [not photographed] and he introduced me as the "team 'tog" [which i keep saying Im going to get on the back of a hockey shirt] and everyone was like "Oh Ive seen ur pics they're great"

 no accounting for taste sometimes

Bought myself a new tripod just before I went on holiday a month or two back. IMO best thing to do is get yourself a Manfortto 180 CLB tripod for about £100. Worth every penny, a superb tripod.

However, I find that if you're not careful a tripod may help you get a superb photo, but it greatly limits your creativity. You end up spending more time lugging the thing around and worrying about positioning the tripod than actually taking photos.

Read what Ken Rockwell has to say on the subject here.

Personally, I find monopods a waste of time too. But hey, i'm just a noivce so probably don't really know what I'm talking about :)

I was walking past a charity shop in Streetly and saw a (quickly goes to look) Cullman and bought it for £4.98. I had to make a friction spacer thingy, piece of bent alloy, for the column and there wasn't a camera/tripod quick release adaptor, 2 pieces of plywood, a cut down Whitworth bolt and a strip of Lino fixed that. It works a treat now good as new.
