Can anyone tell me what size thread the screw is which holds your camera to the tripod? I need to get one today, do you think a DIY store would sell one?

Thanks.

3/8ths i think

Reckon you're more likely to get one in a specialist camera shop, cheers..

or it could also be a 1/4" whitworth (I can't remember the specifics of whitworth but it's do to with the thread pitch)

just 3/8" isn't sufficient. There should be a diameter *and* something to describe the thread - either pitch - 20 (threads per inch), or a code to describe what the screw form is. UNC (Unified Coarse thread) / UNF (Unified fine thread) / BSP (British Standard Pipe) etc.,

The wrong threads per inch could screw in a turn or two but wouldn't be safe and could chew up the thread on the bottom of the camera. The different thread forms have different angles and radius'.

I will try and work out exactly what thread it is later today.

It's a 1/4" Whitworth or UNC.....they're the same pitch (20 tpi) and diameter but have a slightly different thread angle but this makes no difference.

3/8 for medium format and larger cameras. You may have some luck finding the 1/4-20 with a thumbwheel at a dump - look for adjustable tubular steel furniture. If you need to replace a lost part you'd be better off with something more suitable.
