Current 2.1 set are on their way out and not very nice looking either. Could anyone recommend a nice pair of speakers, without a sub, that have quite a small profile but still churn out nice quality?

Preferrably has to look nice a yew pedestal desk :)

I thought Bose were meant to be good? I was thinking more discreet or slimline if possible but am worried that they will sound terrible? Oh, didn't realise you can get wood speakers which means I can go larger as they'll not look so out of place :D No idea which ones are good though. Would have to be reddish type wood. Something like this perhaps:

On second thoughts the wood speakers are horrendous!!! Perhaps I should head into pc world and listen to some?

lol, I think we are starting to go slightly off track here. Small, discreet speakers that won't look out of place on a yew pedestal desk. Oh, and ones which sound good! :D

What Bose do best is sell themselves, as said above get something else for half the price, if your desktop can't handle the Creative T40s try the T12s at about half the size and half the price their sound quality is excellent.

Yeah, maybe, but almost all computer speakers sound utter c**p.
So many people seem to think that if they need speakers for their computer then they need computer speakers, when all they actually need is either a pair of active speakers or a small amp and any stereo speakers.
I used my Neutrons as my computer speakers and while they could be considered too big by some, they were wonderful, and now have been replaced by the AVI ADM9.1's, which are 50% bigger again...!!

Took a trip to PC World, Bose Companion 5 sounded awesome but did cost £299. Was surprisingly disappointed with the Creative ones, perhaps a poor sound card? Ended up with the Edifier Aurora 2.1 in black and it is very clear even at low volumes. Not the deepest of base but good enough for me!

Cheers for all the advice. :)

The T12's didn't really impress at all and the T40 didn't sound great compared to the price tag, although I was hoppng across to the Bose system to compare.

A few other brands such as Sandstorm and PC World's own brand sounded horrific. The source file could have been poor but there was a set of JBL's on the same feed which sounded good, although rather hideous looking lol

I can't really understand why the T40 didn't sound all that good, perhaps there was too much background noise?

In the end as long as you're happy with the sound you get now who cares what make/model the speakers are. :)

I've had the Bose Companion 20's for a few months now. I bought them to replace a Creative 2.1 set up and am very happy with them.

I've found the sound to be a lot better at low volumes. Some of the pc speakers I've tested need to be turned up a bit to output the full tonal range.

The Bose speakers are expensive but I'm happy with them. I did look at the Creative T40's too and they're very good for the money.

I always thought my T40s lack bass, pretty good with the mid to high ranges though. I had a pair of Logitech Z10s before them, LOVED THEM. Then they broke :(

really? the T40 are generally said to be good enough not to need a sub.

certainly mine shake my desk up nicely :D

I reckon it's my onboard sound, I'll pick up a soundcard at some point. My Z5500s make the T40s a little redundant though ;)
